Default auto tensioner failing?

I tried searching and I couldn't really find too much info. What are the symptoms of the h22 auto tensioner failing? How can you tell if you need a new tensioner?

Right now I have this whirling coming from the engine when first step on the gas. But it goes away as I drive. I kinda comes and goes at idle.

Any help would be appreciated.

Where is it coming from? Mine sounded like a gargling sound at 3K. You would hear it more when coming off the gas.

gargling, flapping, many different noises.

If it IS failed, or failING, the cam timing it going to retard causing your car to act sluggish.

Your best bet (if I were in your shoes) is to pull the valve cover off and check the tension on the belt. Make sure that it won't slide back and forth across the cam sprockets and that you have decent tension front and back.

Hmm. Thanks for the input guys. The whirling/gargling is coming from what seems the exhaust cam gear area.

Make sure you dont have an exhaust leak where the 2 pieces of the header connect right there in front of the motor.

just get someone to hold the revs in that range with the hood open and check it out. Isolate the noise.
