Default Buying motors? How does it work?

When i buy a motor...how can i tell if its legit? Is it suppose to come with papers from the original owner saying "I XXX sell this b16 to XXX?" How does this work...just out of curiousity?

96+ motors come with VIN plates on the motor and tranny. i would run those through CARFAX. 96 or older, have block numbers, i dont know how they get ran though. it would also be a good thing if you saw the motor come out a legit car and get a copy of the title with a bill of sale.
