Default Please Help ASAP Intank 255 lph Walbro Pump Install gone bad?

Here's my problem.

Gas Tank is empty with light on.

After installation I turned my ignition on for the fuel to prime, then I started my car and let it idle for about 5 min. Everything was perfectly fine.

5 min later car started to sputter and engine shut off, I restarted the car 4 times again and each and every time it sputtered n died.

So I went out and bought 2 gallons of gas and poured it in.

Gas still empty but light off

I let it idle and everything was fine again it didnt sputter and it didn't shut off.

I took her out to drive and the car would sputter on n off. I would be driving at a constant say 3500 rpm and there woudl be no power even at 100% full throttle the rpm would not go up and it will drop, then power would kick back in ect...

So I decided to fill the car up completely and now everything is back to normal...

I need to know if my installation was bad or is it normal for these walbro intank fuel pump to do this... also i would like to know if the walbro fuel pumps require the tank to be at least 1/4 full or else i will be running into this probloem over and over again...

TY

Specs:

96 JDM ITR Motor
Fmax Turbo Kit (No IC piping installed, only manifold, turbo, dp, oil feed/return/ and intercooler.)

yes the filter is on correct i made sure.

My assumption was also the same as u in regards to no gas... but when i did the install I had plenty of fuel in my tank. + It idled fine for the first 5 min.

what I also forgot to add is this:

According to my a/f guage when ever my rpm doesn;t increase while wot the guage is at completly lean, when power kicks in again and rpm goes back up a/f guage goes to rich not completly, and these are both at wot.

Basically i'll have the gas pedal to teh floor, even tho i'm at 100% full throttle rpm dos not increase, but steadliy decreases... while all this is happening my a/f guage goes to lean all the way. OUt of no where power kicks back in at 100% full throttle and guage goes to rich.

Help?

could be some moisture somehow got into the gas too.. Try some gas treatment. can't hurt. Although it does sound like somthing other than that.

Maybe your fuel system wasn't fully pressurized and it had air in the lines.

I just put a fuel pump in my car this weekend and unfortunately I won't be able to see if its working properly for a while, but I would say check to see if you have the right fuel pressure or if something is messed up with the lines.

Dont worry man. It's a common problem with the Walbro intake fuel pumps. Many have had the same concerns you have had. In a lot of cases the gas tank has to be over 1/8 full (an in rare cases 1/4 full) otherwise the car will run out of gas. Not sure why, but i've seen numerous posts where this is the case.

I was on a slight incline with ~1/4 tank or so and I noticed the idle drop a bit, opened the hood and checked the fuel pressure, it was several psi lower - freaked me out. I figured the walbro was hungry and needed more fuel, so I went and filled up and it was back to normal.

The pump probably has a tendency to suck more air in or something (if that is possible) because of how much it flows (or how hard it works)

Solution: fill up more frequently.

just remember fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel, so i'm not sure how that walbro works but its always a good idea to have at least a half tank otherwise, you are just burning up the pump

i have the same exact proble tonight. with my tank reading 1/4 full i almost ran out of gas tonight on the highway. i started sputtering bad especially after going around big turns. i beleive that if i pull the walbro back out and use the original filter baggie (its bigger and longer) then the proble will be solved. i noticed when i put the walbro in with the new (smaller bagie) but i didnt really thinkn about it until tonight. obviously the little shorter baggie supplied by walbro isnt long enough to grab the gas on the bottom of the tank so i figured if i use the original (mine still clean) filter baggie that will solve the problem cause it is long and big enough to reah the gas on the bottom of the tank.

I have the walbro 255hp in my 95 civic ex and I have never experienced any of the problems you guys describe... Just thought I'd throw that in.

I guess I have gotten lucky too because I have been using Walbro pumps for 3 years without any problems. I also have a friend with a 600hp RX-7 who uses a dual intank Walbro GSS342 setup with no prolbems. Your problem is most likely related to the KNOWN HIGH FAILURE RATE main relay switch that controls voltage to the fuel pump. Sometimes adding a new part will kill an existing weak link in a setup.

Do you think that is the case with all of us? My car is 99, but I guess the bad relay doesn't care.

no i still think its related to that filter baggie. think about it. the walbro pump is the same size cosmeticaly compared to the stock honda one but the walbro has a way smaller filter baggie. and then w start running out of gas with a 1/4 of tank left in our cars and when we fill up the problems go away. it has to be the fuel pick. if it was a relay then the pump wouldnt work at all.

I think I am going to look for a new OEM size inlet filter. But, I have read (if I remember right) that the relay fails intermittently (though it would be quite a coincidence that if failed every time the tank was <1/4)

Are all OEM inlet filters the same size? I think Full Race Geoff had a thread about using one from a car with a big engine or something along those lines, and it worked well - I need to search.

Listen to this man I've installed 2 Walbro pumps - one in my CRX and one in my brother's CRX. Mine worked fine, always has worked fine, mainly because I bought a new CRX Si baggie and mounted the pickup in the stock location. Walbro doesn't make a pump for CRXs so I had to custom-fit the Integra one and rewire.

My brother's, however, was a nightmare, mainly because we tried to use the Walbro pickup tube and baggie. Main things to remember are: 1) Make sure the pickup tube is the same length, 2) Make sure the baggie is not bent or pressing against anything. It should sit very low in the tank in the middle of the baffled area with the pickup roughly the same height as the bag (bag should be horizontal along the bottom of the tank).

When we first did his pump he had tons of problems with the gas always having to be extra full, etc. Finally had to take it out and re-do it and have had zero problems since.

Your fuel gauge is controlled by a float in the fuel tank (at least, on my CRX it is, now sure about newer models). It's separate from the fuel pump. The only thing it has in common is a) it's mounted in the tank, b) the sender wires go through the same connector as the pump. So you might want to check the plug is connected firmly, and that the float is unimpeded in its up-and-down motion.

I got a new fuel pump filter from Canadian Tire for like $10 or something... pretty cheap.
