I just purchased a new head and it came with a mugen head gasket. The guy claims that it has less than 5K miles on it. Do you guys think it would be safe to reuse it or should I just buy a new head gasket?

Well, what do you expect those ******* vultures to say? You need to find a neutral. onformed opinion on this. Being a $190 gasket makes me think that it would be reusable a few times.

It can be reused all honda dealerships and most people will tell you they are not and for the 50 bucks a stock one is I would get a new one most of the time, but in your case being a mugen one and if you want the higher compression just clean it really really good check it make sure everything looks ok and get some copper spray to spray on there and everything should be fine. HTH
im a technician at honda, and ive always learned that once the headgasket has been crushed into place, it cannot be reused...but, it doesnt take that long to take a head off, maybe you should try it, and see if it holds...the copper spray isnt a bad idea.
however, ive heard that headbolts can be used 3 times without problems with leakage.

personally I would never reuse a headgasket after it's been through a heat cycle or two. You might be able to get away with it with cooper spray and all, but why bother? just take an oem and pull out the middle layer, there's ur mugen gasket right there,
lol, I'm re-re-using a headgasket at the moment (notice the "re"), no problems.....but, I wouldn't trust it in the long run.
I just don't give a rats if it blows out, just tow it in to my work and work on it.
However, from other accounts/tuners, most have been in the same boat, they have re-used it but its one of those "you never know".
Headbolts I've re-used as well, but its one of those things if you feel like taking it aprart in a few months down the road.
clutches, pistons, piston rings, valve seals, stuff like that isn't worth re-using nor to purchase used
where can i find more info about making my own thinner headgasket with the oem gasket? how safe is it? id like to bump my compression up a bit when i get my b18c block back in.
The mugen gasket is a stock gasket with the top layer removed. They then coat the new top layer which is actually the old middle layer with a thin silver copperspray LIKE substance. I have owned 4 mugen gaskets in my days.
Now I also made a 2 layer gasket out of a new stocker before by actually removing the middle layer and just copper spraying the 2 outer layers with 2 LIGHT coats of full coverage. whoever said make sure you use alot of copperspray is dead wrong, you will do more harm than good.

Besides your own visual evaluation, do you have any concrete evidence to support this claim? The Mugen gasket we recently installed looked distinctly different in construction from the OEM gasket it replaced, "silver copper-spray" or not. One of the more noticeable differences is the definite "ridge" around the bores that was not visible on the OEM gasket. I'm quite confident that the Mugen gasket (and most likely Spoon, though I've never seen one) does not utilize any OEM components in its construction.
Edit: This is not to say that these manufacturers never employ OEM components in their products (e.g. Spoon's pistons, Mugen's valvesprings), however I simply don't think that it applies to this case.

they stretch....i'm building a GSR and i am planning on doin exactly as Tbone said...i dont care how different the mugen is...it aint worth $190 to me!
I'm not saying there actually modding a stock gasket. i'm saying that thats what it's based on. I should have inserted the word basicly a stock gasket with the top layer removed. Either way, you should never reuse a gasket that has any crush zones. And I have a stock gasket right here that has that definite ridge on the middle layer that you speak of.
Either way I'm not here to argue , you guys can spend 100plus to buy the mugen like I did 4 times, or you can make one Similar to the mugen out of a stock gasket for half the cost
