who has made their own downpipe?.......questions inside
I have been welding for 5 months now and are pretty good, thing is I have a full turbo kit on my car with no down pipe. Would it be an ok idea to cut angles out of the 3" pipe and weld it back together because I dont have a mandrel bender. I would really only need a 45 and a 30 bend.
So basically has anyone done this before

first off, what kind of car is it? what kind of turbo position do u have? and why cant you just buy mandrel bends????? u dont need to bend the pipe yourself, they come pre-bent. also if u plan on keeping a/c a 3" DP is really hard to fabricate
if you're using log style manifold liek revhard, drag, inline pro, you need to get it out of the turbine housing at 2.5" with standard U bends. You can fit a 3" all the way in, but you'll have to cut more at tighter angle to get it to fit with AC.
Why don't you buy u-bend ? You can get ANY angles from U-bend..

My turbo kit is a drag gen 1 kit for the d16z6 engine. I didnt think that a 3" DP would work with the AC.
I guess i will have to see when i put the engine in.
BTW: I have to start with a 2.5 from the flange and then flare to a 3", is that correct????
My cat back is 2.5, so would a 3 in DP be pointless in spool up time?

Here's my 3" downpipe we made for my Civic... We had to cup up a 3" donut from Road Race Engineering and re-angle it every 90 degrees or so, because of space issues with the JimFab crossmember, but we didn't want to keep A/C so that was one hurdle out of the way...
It's REALLY complicated, and still to date hasn't been completed because the welder is not where the car is at, so it's a back and forth thing, and we're also fighting laziness isues, as well.

This is along the same subject....when fabing a custom DP, can you use the same cuplers that you might use for your charge pipes? I mean clean the pipes...jb weld...and then a coupler...would that work for those of us who dont have a welder?

Yeah a dp would definatly melt a coupler in no time.

Of course you can do that.

it was just a though...i honestly didnt know the temp going to your charge pipes was that big of a difference between the temp going down your DP....i was just trying to think of a way to craft a DP for those of us who dont have welders and dont want to spend $100-150 to have some muffler shop do a half assed job...
If you wanna save money, what you can do is cut up the pipes and line them up so that it makes the shape that you desire. Then use a marker and make marks so that when you take it to the welding shop, they will know exactly where to weld. It shouldn't cost more than $70 to weld 3-5 spots

And you think putting silicone couplers on burning metal isnt half-assed? what in gods name are you smokin. Not to be a dick, but in every single post, i see your trying to save money. Thats cool and all, but this isnt a cheap sport, try chess, thats cheap.

you might be able to angle the first piece up a bit to give you more room to do a harder bend.. that's what we ended up doing on a CRX without the Jimfab bar.. we cut up a U Bend and angled it with 15 degree angles on each making it a tighter bend.. just an idea.
haha, I am 99% sure that you cut up the donut to the desired angles that you want. essentially I would need a 45 and a couple 15 degree bends to make it come out good.
I can believe a shop would charge that much for welding, I can do it my self and plan to, plus it takes about 20 min to do. But luckly my friend has a welder.

This isnt meant to thread jack...but jesus christ...im sorry im not sponsored and blah blah blah...some ppl are looking for alternatives and ive seen numerous DP's done by a local muffler shop that have just gone to hell because the muffler shop sucks. The silicon was just an idea...some people are willing to think of alternative methods to get things done economically and challenging yourself to think of alternatives....
