i have a 99 GSR in my 97 hatch...and my buddy has a P28...should i just get the P28 and get it chipped...or buy a 94 GSR or JDM R ECU?

 

If you get the P28 chipped, you will have no control over your IAB. However, that would be ideal if you get a Skunk2 intake.

 

fer sure....yep, you're stuck with the good ol' p72. You can get that chipped...or you can spend another 300 to get the mani.

I ran a chipped p28 in my gsr/civic a couple o days...vtec kicked in a littler harder (most likely because it was so much later), but I could feel a noticible difference in performance compared to stock.

 

well if it helps jared, i have the skunk intake right now....but other than that and the 5-zigen exhuast, the thing is stock....i plan on running cams in the future. should i worry about not having the knock sensor?
and will i need to rewire the ditributor?

fowler or anybody who knows, what is the best stock ecu? Here is my situation and I always wonder if I'm setup okay. I originally dropped a 94 JDM b18c complete swap in my 92 dx hb. Then hit water and sent a rod through the block. I then dropped in a 95 USDM b18c1 long block, kept everything else. On the ecu bar code label along with some other numbers it says P72. Is this a JDM? I'm wondering because it's possible my ecu was switched out, without me knowing of course. I'm assuming it's OBD-1. Is this good, bad or what?

 

Sounds fine to me. P72 designates the motor that it came from. P72 = GSR...so you're cool there. I'm not sure how to tell if the ECU is JDM or not...which could be important since they have automatic GSR motors over there. In any case, I'm almost positive that you can get it programmed for a 5sd if in fact it is an automatic ECU.

obd1 is of course better because you dont want the car throwing codes and going into safe moder everytime you make add a aftermarket part. ob2 cars monitor more parts of the motor and the car itself. would runing a bit more fuel set off a code? its a pain in the ***. also, if you are gonna get a R ecu, just FYI you wont be able to use it because R's come with factory theft deterent sys. your ECU will be locked up.

but back to the matter that tis post was started for, i have read locash racing's deals and with the P28 ecu, i can get the skunk2 program for my car...i have the skunk2 manifold, so i already have no IAB sensor. but should i still have to run my apex'i v-afc with this new computer?

I know that you can run both at the same time...I'm not sure what the benefits of it are. I mean, you can tune your air/fuel ratio and vtec and stuff, but with the chip, it's already preset to settings that have worked for others. I really don't know...just my idea. Anyone else know?

 

where is the IAB sensor located on the intake manifold???

 

the thing is that the skunk2 ecu program is known to run rich as hell...and i don't wanna be seen at the gas station EVERYDAY filling up...i ant SOME kind of gas economy. so with the v-afc i would lean it out a little bit and be all set on the street.

the IAB is located on the back of the manifold of the gsr. if you have a type r or a del sol vtec, you shouldn't have it, so don't worry!

I just installed a skuk2 manifold in my gsr and i hear some people say that u dont need the IAB sensor that is located in the back of the manifold...I am kinda confused cause i plugged all the sensors back on and if the IAB is located in back of the manifold i put that into the skunk2 manifold also...so WTF...is that sensor working or do i even need that sensor on the skunk2 manifold

 

The IAB is the black box that is on the underside of the GSR intake manifold.

Most of the JDM OBD1 5speed P72 ECU's are half-sized.
I've seen some JDM ECU's that are not half size though - like a JDM P28, P08, and AUTO P72 ECU which actually has OBD2 hardware on it. They're quite nutty, that company...Honda.
