5W-20 in my B18C5?
i went to the hOnda for an oil change which i always do. i have pretty much a brand new motor b18c5 with about 3000 miles on it in a 00 civic si. Anyway, they ended up putting in Hondas new 5w-20 in my motor. they insisted that it would be fine, and that its very close to 5w-30 and that it would decrease emissions and fuel consumption. my motor has a fully built Toda B head. will there be any problems or should i just switch back to 5w-30. i dont rev the **** out of it but i want to be safe. i'm in south Texas right now where it has been getting pretty cold lately. will this oil be OK. Its made by Exxon to Hondas specs...thats what it says on the quart anyway. (just a little paranoid)!!!
thanks
thanks
I am surprised they would do that. If it was me Id either change it back to 5w30 myself or take it back and make them do it. Honda only recommends the 5w20 in 02+ models.

I'd do the same. 5w20 may seriously thin out after 3000 miles.

that 5w20 oil is made for most 2001+ hondas and fords. But on all 5w20 application it will say that on the oil cap if its required. Anyway if you decide to switch to synthtic, mobile1 one offers a systhetic version but its called 0w20 not 5w20. ment speciffically for those fords and hondas
We stick 5w20 Oil in every car that comes through our dealership and tells the customer to go F themselves. J/K
Yah, if you're concerned with it, take it back and make them change it. At most dealerships Oil Changes are at cost and designed so that they can make upsales on them. Like, brake jobs and what not.

Many people think 30 weight is too thin, much less 20 weight. I wouldn't use it. Our engines rev way too high for a 20 weight to work well. 5w30 or 10w30 is the only thing you should put in a b18c5 IMO.

i'd suggest no lower than 5w30.

If you look in a bottle of 5w-20, there is a warning label that clearly states do not use unless this is the weight recommended by the car maker.
well i decided to just change my oil in the morning. went with someones suggestion of using Castrol GTX 5w-30
. Better safe than sorry i guess

That's not true. In the owners manual for my '02 RSX Type S, it specifically says to use 5w-30. But for the base model RSX, it says it can use either a 5W-20 or 5w-30.

Isnt that a 02+ model?
Is there a 2001 or older that requires 5w20? (Insight maybe I guess?)

ive used 5/20 in my c5, raced on it as well, no problems here, ofcourse i change it every 1000 miles
along with the plugs after every track event
along with the plugs after every track event
the problems that may arise from running the 5w-20 would definitely only arise after a good 3000+ hard miles. I'd still take it back and tell them you're not satisfied after all!

Do you take oil samples, or have you been racing with this 5W20 for 100,000 miles? Otherwise, how do you know you're not doing damage?

nah man for real, when i pulled that oil its like ******* water. i can see why it couldnt be used in an rsx Type s eithier. the high revs will burn it right up. if i was too use it. i would definetely always be checking my oil and probably change it every 1500 miles on my C5 depending on how hard i drove it.
yeah, it spins nicer...but reliabilty is an issue with me.
LIKE WATER!!!!!
tip of the day....be smart. use 5w-30.(at least)

I dont take oil samples, but i do race, and i change oil before and after i race, or every 1000 miles, its only a few bux to change your oil/filter.
as for doing damage to my motor, i believe im doing fine since i do my own work, ive taken the motor apart several times to inspect it.
along with the good ol' spoon magneto drain plugs that help identify if your having an oiling problem, im doing just fine.
i do believe that if you abuse this oil and do not change it when you should, that indeed it will wear thin, and not do its job properly.
ive had this in mind the whole time, which is why i change the fluids in my car so often.
but i think the rumor is true...ITR motors get better with age.

If its a new motor, I don't think it'll be a probelm, but as you put miles in, I would get some higher viscosity or your car will burn oil like a bitch
