Default Revved to 8700rpm....any damage?

There is a copy of this in the Integra forum too....

I was messing around with a Z28 last night and I missed a shift going into 4th at about 80.....not bad....but I went into 2nd instead.

This morning I called my buddy who is well versed in motors. He said that if the motor still runs and there is no noticable loss in performance, any difference I see will be purely psycological. He is going to adjust my valves tomorrow just in case (he said) they went out of whack. My cam lobes might have hit my valves, the top of the piston might have impacted a little bit......oh man.

Of course I'm still very worried, so any second opinions will be greatly appreciated. What could have happened? What's the worse case? My motor still runs fine....but I hear a little more valve tap than before....I think. Oh man...

BTW, I have a Integra LS....rev limit is 7200.

Maybe you'll learn not to mess around on the street. Enjoy your car in proper motorsports venues like autocrossing, track events, or even drag racing.

But Rev Limit was 7200! Have you cut out the limiter? If you have not raised the compression you may have survived the damage. Also what about things like cam timing???

I agree, kind of dangerous doing that stuff on the street, though....

Not to rag, but I gen cross the line in drag (1/4 mi.) @ 9100 in 3rd gear, but that is built b16a so those will stand the rev a bit better....

WTF??!!!!! STOP GIVING OUT MISINFORMATION!

There was a post just like this last week. The rev limiter will NOT stop you from over revving if the engine is already spinning that fast. Rev limiter will only stop you from gassing it too high.

i would adjust the valves and check for any knocking. If you hear knocking then you might have thrown a bearing. If not adjust the valves and don't worry.

Well, I can tell you that I have a 7600 rev limit in d16 turbo and hit that like 2-3 times on hard driving and it literally bounces off the limiter - DOES NOT OVERSHOOT IT ON A 287 WHP car!!!!!!!!So eat the WTF talk. There is no damn way I would overshoot it by 1500 rpm!

PS I guess you could hit any rpm you tried for (temporarily) if your clutch hooked up. like on his inadvertant downshift...

That is what happened....basically what he did was downshift to second gear while going 80 mph.....your revlimiter will not stop your engine from revving too high if you did that.

Prolly should have read the original post a little better. Oh well, no ones hurt or anything so its all good.
