Default B20Vtec Probs

Just got my hondata tuned and dynoed my setup and came up real short from where I wanted to be. This is my setup:

B16A1 Head P&P, JE Valvetrain, CTR intake Cam, ITR/CTR exhaust cam, ITR IM, Short Ram Intake, B20B block overbored .20mm w/ Wiseco 10:1 pistons, Crower Cams Import Power ingnition/blaster, Accel plug wires, B&M FPR, stock obd1 RC Cleaned and Blueprinted injectors, DC Headers(terrible reweld job they need to go), Hollowed cat/Test Pipe, 2 1/2 inch catback exhaust, AEM Adjustable cam gears, Hondata S100 ecu, CTR Tranny w/ LSD, Jun Flywheel, Exedy Race Clutch, stock: overbored TB, b20b rods, b20b crank, b16a fuel rail

With all of this I only put down 157 whp and 130 ft-lb torque on the dyno. My timing at the crank was off one tooth, which we tried to overcome by adjusting the cam gears, but that only freed up another 4 ponies. Just trying to figure out what could be causing my lack of HP, was expecting around 200, but at least 180 or so, both myself and the tuners were very surprised and disappointed. Any ideas on what might be f--- up or needs to be adjusted I am all ears. Anyone know a quality shop or person in AZ to tear down my engine and troubleshoot? I will not go back to SRD, they are the ones that built it and I have no faith in them anymore, have heard mixed reviews about Import Powerhouse, and don't know of anywhere else to go cept APEX in Tucson, but that is too much of a pain. Lend some help please.

Why not higher compression?

Have you compression tested it? If so what were the numbers that you put down on that?

How is ignition? Fuel? etc.

What size fuel injectors? (sorry if I missed that if you said it...)

I personally would upgrade your fuel rail. If stock injectors work on that. What is your VTEC X-Over? How is your THR?

um getting a bigger fuel rail isnt going to do u jack

fix your timing, thats your #1 problem at the moment. Then compression test.

if your compression #'s are around 200-220 then ur in good shape.

go back to dyno then see what you put down.

200 whp is WAY TOO Much to expect out of that setup especially with only 10.1 compression.....and stock honda cams....no way you will get 200 without cams and higher compression

my setup
b20 stock pistons
b16 head
toda b's
p28 chipped
itr intake manifold
dc 2.5 collector header

176 and 136

you probably still have the 2 inch collector header....
you are expecting way too much out of your setup!

With 10:1 pistons and Type R cams, I wouldn't expect much power at all. Torque numbers look alright though.

i think my problem lies in the pistons. it was recommended that i stay at 10:1 to not worry about running on race fuel all the time, but with the b16 head i think the compression is in the 9's. i am probably going to go turbo or new pistons, when i have the money. the bottom end is just pistons. i am planning on going with skunk2's or Jun's once again when i have the $. i had the engine pulled apart and nothing else came up, so that is where i stand thanks for all your input

who told you if you run higher that 10.1 compression your goin to need to use race gas ...there are people with compression at high as 13 runnning on pump gas ...its all in how good you tune the car ...

like me.....in the b18c5 engine

in my b20....12.1:1 compression....93 octane....

you do need more compression though....do a 2 layer or even 1 layer headgasket...that will bump compression .8 with a one layer and .4 with 2 layer....
maybe get the head milled!

i probably will just wait till i have the $ for a turbo kit and go that route. then after the weak b20 falls apart i will sleeve it and be all good. i can't justify spending the 600-800 on new pistons when i can put a decent turbo together for 2-3 times the cost. we shall see. we don't have 93 here in AZ, 91 is the highest pump gas.

91 octane will work too!!! and if you are gonna go turbo there are even more problems to worry about!!!!!! especially in az....

this is how my compression tested: 130,130,125,130. Right.... so i don't know what I am going to do. I think i will slap some higher comp pistons in for now and prepare the engine to sell. who knows. i am broke so we shall see.

yea, compression is to low, you need rods, and mabee some lightweight stuff. so the moter revs, flywheel perhaps. and like previously stated, timing is #1 priority. and what are you reving to? 8000-8500? and i'm not sure about that ignition setup, factory honda coils are more than enough.

I have a Jun lightweight flywheel and after Hondata my redline and rev limiter were set in the 8500-9000 range. I am thinking FI now, but there is a lot of s--- i need to do to make a reliable fi daily driver. I might put higher comp. pistons in then sell the motor in 6mos to a year and buy a fully built LSVtec for FI

It' very low compression. Did you do compression test with throttle body plate open? What head gasket are you using?
My b20 vtec made 174whp and 130 ft-lb torque with stock b16 head and intake manifold, gsr cams,IHE, of course completely stock b20 short block. Just 3 dyno runs and not tuned.
