Default Can I assemble the bottom end my self or do I have to take it to a machine shop?

Just wondering if this is something I can take on myself, or if it is recommended that I take everything to a machine shop? By time I get all my stuff, everything will be ready to be put back together, as everything will be balanced and the cylinders will be bored and honed to the pistons spec. I think my only concern is the bearings. Will this be a problem for me to install if I've never done it before? Any special tools I'm gonna need to assemble the bottom end? I have good torque wrenches that I'm borrowing from other people and I have all the basic tools. Thanks.

I just finished about ten minutes ago with my second engine build ever. Still have the greasy hands to prove it .

Its is not all that hard to do it your self. Just make sure you check all the bearing clearances with plasi guage. And check the ring end gap for proper fit.

Get your self a helms and get to cracking. This forum has helped me learn alot about the proper step to building a motor. Just take your time and your motor will be gravy.

good luck. -David-

Just make sure everything is very clean. When I did mine, I cleaned it with hot soapy water, then blew all the water off with an air compressor. After that, I rinsed it with hot water, blew all the water off again, then I used mineral spirits to wipe everything down AGAIN, espically the cylinder walls. This was done to the block, and all related rotating assembly parts. Also, make sure all the critical holes have been chased with a tap, I almost forgot this step my first time . Assembely lube, ring compressor, haynes manual, torque wrenches (like you said), and your set. Also make sure that all your critical nuts and bolts (the ones your going to torque) have at least oil applied to them so your torque readings are accurate. Some manufactures include a special lube for this, but I just used motor oil in my assembely (mostly stock, it's my daily driver, boost project in the works ). I'm kinda tired, I may have forgotten something, anyone else want to chime in. . . .

I'm going to be assembling my block my self too. I have assembled my head just by using C-speed.com and a Haynes manual and I have been driving it for almost a year now so I'm confidant that I can do it. I have always been good at fixing stuff, never had a problem with my car I couldn't fix, and I have been fixing friend's cars left and right. I think that if you have experience you can do a better job than any shop, the time and attention to detail of an owner will go way beyond that a shop. Oh and get a Helms manual, I have one now too.
