Default How long do you go on Synthetic?

I just recently decided to try Mobil 1 synthetic in my '97 Lude. How long do you guys who do normal everyday driving, autocross, or whatever else last on synthetic? Just curious. Thanks.

I'm running the Mobil 1 also, but I change my oil, no matter what, between 2,500-3,000 miles regardless of what oil I use.

The purpose of synthetic oil is for it to last longer and not break down like natural oil does. Synthetic oil can generally last twice as long as normal oil. Changing it before then is just wasting your money if the oil you drail is still clean after 3k. The addatives within the synthetic are enginered to last longer.

I go at least 4k on my Amsoil, sometimes up to 6k.

mobil 1 5w30, changed at 6000 mi intervals for normal driving.

bout to switch to amsoil and maintain the same interval.

changing every 3000 is throwing your money away.

I go a MINIMUM of 5000 miles on synthetic - I am comfortable going 7,500 mile on synthetic w/ a filter change at 3,750.

I went 6.000 Miles on my last change using Mobil 1.My used oil analysis came good with a TBN of 6.That means I could have gone 10.000 miles.
I drive quite hard, vtec often but no auto-x.Only city miles here.
Oil going black doesn't mean it has to be changed. It means it does its job, cleaning the engine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after a certain milage (ie 100K+ of using non-synthetic), it isn't reccomended to start using synthetic. BTW I change my oil every 2500k w. OEM honda filter(damn the size change!), and Mobil1 15W-50 simply to help raise my oil pressure(long story). So what if I baby my lude, she deserves every bit of it.

You are using a heavier than recommended weight of oil and you live in Wisconcin?!?! Are you nuts? In that climate I'd use 0-20...

Man, you guys wait forever to change oil........... someone said 7000 miles? wow, yeah NA cars can go longer but, damn.... every 3500 should be the limit.... i go every 1500 due to FI..(well did)...... how much does a change cost even w/synthetic? 30 bucks tops....... cheap insurance

gerhard's done a lot of research on this topic.

FI applications may be different, but for a stock H22 in regular service (daily driving) 7500 mi is his recommended change interval, and only because at that point the filter's probably starting to go.

the 3000 mi myth is propogated by those parties who stand to profit from it.

I guess I forgot to mention that I don't drive my car in winter... and not much in cold weather at all. Do you think that I'm effecting the oil pressure at all by using a heiver weight? how about my other Q, as far as when you shouldn't use synthetic... anyone know?
Thanks-Matt

On my 325ci the dealership changes it every 15,000 miles. Hey, that's what they recommend...so I go by that. Changing synthetic every 3K miles is just wasting money.

Another good thing...I get free oil changes on my Prelude too. Every 3000 miles on mineral oil.

i just recently swicthed to Mobil 1. about to go with amsoil. currently changing my oil every 4,500 miles or so. the owners manual states to change the oil every 7,500 miles. so if Honda feels that good maintenance is fresh fossil oil every 7,500 miles, why change your synthetic every 3,000?

granted that the FI guys have a lot more breakdown do to the Turbo using it as well, but us N/A guys shouldnt have to worry about changing the oil all too often, even if we do drive it hard.

just keep an eye on your level's and if you feel it needs to be changed or the engine temp starts to climb, change it. otherwise start putting that money towards something that will make you change it sooner.

but thats just my .02

I wonder if there is anything to the claims of enhanced mileage from Amsol - If it did improve economy and lasted like they claim, it might be worth while for me, otherwise I can't rationalize it for my car...

i don't think it'll improve economy or anything like that, but i think it's #1 real selling point is that it's a 100% PAO group IV (and/or V) basestock and additive solution. mobil 1 is great but they dissolve their additive package into group III basestock and mix it with the synthetic stuff. this is after they lost their legal action against castrol and decided that if you can't beat em, join em.

i think you could realistically bump up to a 10000-12000 mi interval on amsoil, with a filter change @ 6000-7500 mi. they actually did a test where they put amsoil into a fleet of NYC cabs. control group on dino, group I changed every 6000 mi, group 2 every 15,000 and group 3 not changed for 65,000 mi. turns out the dismantled engines of the 3rd group looked just as clean as the others...and the dino looked the worse. of course that's their test, and is featured in their marketing literature, but i think amsoil is probably really great stuff.

After a track day , I let it run 3000 miles. Regular driving ,5000 miles. Just make sure to check the oil level regularly.

lol wow

I'll add my 2 cents anyway. If I wait longer than 4000 miles to change my oil and filter my VTEC starts acting up. mobile 1 5W30 on H22A here
