Default Spark Knock / high compression motors question...

Ok i build an LS/VTEC for my 98 civic hatch. But it seems that it is spark knocking or something. It runs fairly strong at WOT in 1 and 2nd but it seems after that it is having problems running etc. For starters I have an:

94+ Integra LS
-block
-crank
-rods (all rebuilt, mains,rods,cylinders honed)

-JDM CTR/PCT pistons (std) w USDM ITR rings

I am running the stock JDM SIR2 (92+)
- head
-intake manifold
-ecu

I have only raced a few of my friends (built gsr swappd 99 SI, skunk 2 manifold, dc sports header, and apexi N! full cat back, lightweight flywheel)and it ran with him and sometimes pulled him I am trying to insure it is running properly, but last night we took it for a "test run" and about 100 + it started to missfire and blow smoke. I pulled the plugs and one of them was gas soaked but it didn't look like it had been struck my the piston. On the way home it was blowing smoke like a freight train so I guess I was driving on a dead cylinder . But I need to know if I am running the wrong GAS (93 only for the 11.9 Cr) or maybe the wrong plugs (getting to close to the high dome of the CTR piston.....

please help

93 octane is fine with 12.0.....w

what is your timing?
what ecu are you running? etc

92 sir JDM obd1 ecu jumped

timing was set at the red mark(16 degress from TDC, right?) with a timing light....

i thought it was the tensioner rattling... but now my cylinder went..no compression in #4!!!!

no compression in 4....hmmmm...not good.....you probably have a burn valve...

that would be better than busted or hole in the piston yah know... I have another head so... how the hell did i burn the valve up? the very tight clearances, high cr, timming or all of it combined.. thanks chad

Do a leakdown to see exactly where you are having problems.

You can burn a valve from having your valvelash set too tight.

if there is no compression at all...probably hole in valve....you won't konw till you rip head off block....

yeah I need to pull the head off today and check it. Alot of people are saying if the cylinder has no cr at all then it has to be a valve. A piston would at least have like 25-45 psi of compression

Hole in piston will leak just as much, ring land damage depends on how severe the damage is and how deformed it is if it melted/embedded aluminum into bore of block. If you are checking compression I assume you are just using a compression gauge. If you can get access to a leakdown gauge it will measure how much pressure the cylinder will hold out of 100PSI and also you will be able to hear/feel where the air is going, coolant, oilpan, exhaust, intake etc.

cool but I can already tell you the smoke was comming out of the crank case breather(valve cover) and out the dip stick if it was pushed all the way down. So hopefull it is just a valve and the smoke is leaking into the head and down the oil holes to the oil pan... save me lots of $ and time...

wish me luck....

I guess I was running too lean on some high Cr setup and now the detonation ate my motor..any ideas?

If its not valves, broken ring lands maybe

yeah i pulled the head off and it's the ring lands..damn this is the second set of CTR's I have ruined. I guess I need some more fuel, better spark or stronger pistons.

Well I have to drive to charlotte to have it tunned. But i guess i will just have to do that next time..anyone else running CTR pistons sharing the same nightmare...?

I once had a B18A/ PCT .20mm over piston/ GS-R head. I calculated the CR at 12.9:1. With the PR-3 head, you're going to be a tad lower than that. Are your pistons standard bore? I tried 91 octane, 93.5, and 101. The 91 would ping under load, even if you were driving through the parking lot. The 93.5 would ping about the same, but a tad better. The 101 didn't ping. I took that motor apart after 1 summer becuase the gas was $3.00/gal for 101 (back then), and the only place I could get it was about 10 miles from my house, and open 7-5, closed sundays.
