this is the 3rd t/o bearing on the 3rd car ive owned that is making that grinding sound

how does it wear down ?

i got NO noise when the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor or just driving.

i get that noise only from letting the clutch out from a standstill (like when the light turns green) until im fully off the clutch pedal.

know what i mean?

What grinding sound? The grinding sound that goes away when you press in the clutch, but when the clutch is up the engine rattles and when you get going it gets even louder? Thats the input shaft bearing. I'll explain both.

The input shaft bearing is here:


It holds the mainshaft in place. It can go bad by violently engaging the clutch repeatedly (like I do), or just go bad over time from wear from the mainshaft.

Not sure about the throwout bearing, but heres my educated guess. It is the bearing on the clutch side of the mainshaft that slides the clutch on and off of the flywheel. When the slave cylinder presses onto the clutch fork, the bearing pushes on the back of the pressure plate which disengages the clutch. It wears again by violent or repeated engagement of the clutch...which is bound to happen over time.

 

bearing allow you to move clutch in and out while shaft is still spinning within the clutch center. a bad bearing will squeal when ever you depress clutch

 

when i let off (disengage) the clutch as i give it gas, it makes a swishing/grinding noise

 

The input shaft bearing clanks when the clutch is NOT depressed. What happens is when you engage the clutch the mainshaft stops spinning, and so the noise stops. If the noise happens WHEN you press the clutch in, then it is a bad TOB.
