Detonation/Pinging...What kind of damage does it cause??
I'm running a high comp LSVTEC around 11.5:1, stock RC injectors, FPR set at 48 psi. I get slight pinging when I'm under heavy load or when I'm going up a hill and gun it. My question is what kind of long term or short term damage does this cause to the motor? I know that pinging/detonation causes a lot of heat in the combustion chamber. What could be damaged? Thanks for the info fellas.
Also, my motor builder told me to create some overlap with the cams using the cam gears. Overlap is when both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time and he said that this would help cool the combustion chamber and deter detonation. Is overlap where the intake cam is advanced more than the exhaust like for example +1 on the intake, 0 on the exhaust?? If not, how do you create more overlap with the cam gears? Thanks again for the info. It's greatly appreciated.

Pinging in hondas often results in a broken rod, or piston......these are both very bad, engine destroying results. The head can actually lift off the block as well.
Oh, check your plugs. They can be damaged long before anything really important is.

You can creat overlap by advancing the intake and retarding the exhaust or you can buy cams like Skunk that have a lot overlap designed into them.
Detonation and pinging can lead to an uncontrollable spark and your engine can go BOOM. 11.5:1 compression is kinda high for the street. My advice is to go with at fatter injector or get your ecu reprogrammed combined with a vafc.

Thanks for the replies. Timing is pushed back to around 10-12 degrees and I still get slight pinging. What size injectors should I go for to be able to run 16 degrees with 91 pump again? 270s or 310s? I was thinking 310s just to be safe and I plan on running the hondata stage 2 with it also. What do you think. TIA.
You may also want to get your head P&Pd...that gets rid of most of the sharp edges in your combution chamber.....those are areas where the preignition will often start.
What octane are you using?
What color are your plugs when you pull them?
Do you see any tiny little dingle berries on them? Somtimes it's just deposits, or it could be tiny specs of alum....
Might start turning your fuel pressure up a little at a time. Keeping an eye on the color of your plugs.
Pinging/Detonation well destroy your engine real quick, get off the gas immedialty when you hear it. It can still be detonating even without you hearing it, so lay off of doing anything that brings it on, until this can be addressed, if possiable. Piston lands or landings well crack, holes getting burned through pistons, are some of things that can go wrong.

Pinging is the sound of detonation. It comes from the cylinder walls as they vibrate, from the charge getting ignited to soon. Thats what causes piston landings to get broken, and cylinder walls to crack.... hehehehe
