I would say things that "sound good" are relative. I would search for sound clips if I were you. We can tell you stuff all day long that you could get but we have no clue what sounds good to you.

best exhaust based on what??? consider this: no matter anyone tells you about this issue, it's going to be strictly based on opinion anyway. you are going to get some many diff responses based on preference.
most after market bolt on exhausts will perform about the same based on other mods. you might be looking at 3-4 whp at most anyway. so with that said, get what you like. you have to obviously like the look and most importantly, get what you can afford. i will say this though, you def want a straight through design system. none of that chambered ****. i have the tsudo fireball catback on my ls and i love it. i was def on a budget and didnt want to drop down the extra 150 for the real 5zigen but my **** works fine and looks and sounds exactly like it. if interested, ck out http://www.apexr1.com great buys there good luck

check out the RSR, Fujitsubo, hytech or SMSP(if u have doe)..or get some custom piping from Kteller8 and purchase a nice quiet yet flowing muffler
custom exhaust just basically means piecing the entire system together, piece by piece
Apipe= header/exhaust manifold
Bpipe= midpipe that connects from the cat to the axleback
Cpipe= axleback portion of the exhaust including muffler
what the guys mean with the custom is to for instance, buy a universal muffler or axleback system and get the midpipe custom fit to it. generally 2.25" is std on most after market systems. to be honest with you, its much easier to just buy the full catback system. direct bolt on and you dont have to pay a muffler shop to piece it all together for you. if you decide to go custom, make sure you roll with mandrel bent pipes. stay away from that crush bent pipe ****, leaves bottlenecks and doesnt flow as smoothly.

i have no other exhaust experience other than my Thermal R&D Classic. its on my 91 LS. very quiet, you can barely hear it at idle, standing up next to your rear bumper, you have to crouch down to hear the rumble. its quiet til you are at WOT at 4k rpms, then its loud, i guess (though not as loud as a stock exhaust with a hole the size of 3 golfballs) i didnt get a chance to dyno my car with stock exhaust on, but im guessing i got about 10 or so HP and Torque with DC 4-2-1, high flow cat and the Thermal. i like it. but thats the only exhaust ive tried
I have the apex-i world sport on my gsr and im very pleased with it. quiet, not too ricey and it tucks most of the muffler up so you dont have 2 feet of canister showing. welds are all high quality and fits well.
