Tokyo Stocks Plunge at Open After Attacks
September 11, 2001 8:37:00 PM ET
TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks plunged at the opening on Wednesday, jolted by news of terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.
The benchmark Nikkei average opened down 1.50 percent or 154.25 points at 10,138.70, a new 17-year low, while the capital-weighted TOPIX index lost 1.53 percent or 16.22 points to 1,041.90.
``We can expect confusion (today),'' said Darrel Whitten, head of research at ABN Amro Securities. ``There has been some time to digest this...(but) we should punch under 10,000, after that it's anyone's guess.''
Sony Corp , an electronics manufacturer that depends on the U.S. market for about 30 percent of its sales, was ask-only at 4,930 yen, down 1.0 percent or 50 yen.
Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) opened at a 30 minutes delay and said it would reduce its price limits by half for the day due to an anticipated high level of volatility.
