Default so...FD opinions

I'm sure it's been covered many times...but...here it goes again, a fresh start

what FD do you think is the best for street strip?

I just got a 96spec ITR engine, with the 4.4. I'm sure the mechanical advantage of a new FD will help considerably...

ohh, i'll get a quaiffe and FD when i get past 21-+whp...so just getting ideas

I ran the ATS 4.929Fd in my Type R tranny and I loved it...on street tires.

On smaller M/T 20'' slicks it sucked because I could not trap over 100mph even crossing the line at over 9000rpm in 4th gear.

With the stock 4.400FD I trapped 103mph more than once and ran the same ETs on a shittier track with worse 60 footers.

for the street the 4.929Fd is bad-***, but if you do a lot of hwy driving you'll probably want to swap in the GS-R .787 5th gear like I did.

I broke my ATS though, so I'm back with the 4.400.

JDM 4.78 because its quicker than stock, u shouldnt loose traction on the streets with sticky tires in 1st gear and its only about $400 and takes a couple hrs to install with the tranny out. ur talkin roughly 500RPM difference between stock and the 4.78.

IMO the 4.78 isn't even noticable enough over the 4.400. I've driven a 4.78 car and the 4.929 is that much better.

I currently have a b16a with a gsr tranny. I'm planning to do some gearing work, and was wondering which senario would have shorter gearing: GSR tranny with 4.929 fd; or stock 98' jdm ITR tranny?

Keep in mind your overall OD tire selection, say if you are running like 16" wheels with a 4.9, nice overall setup for the street. But something like 13" VX wheels with Advan tire with a 4.4 will yeild good numbers both street and track. My personal is 15" wheels 215-45-15 with a 4.7.

It all boils down your engine setup and suspension. If your engine dyno reads peak torque at midrange (around 5500rpm) than a good overall tire selection and a 4.4fd will be more beneficail. But if torque meets at a higher RPM range than something shorter FD will benefit more. Keep in mind your choice of slick size as well at the track. Also traction bars, alignment specs and spring rate both rear and fronts makes a big difference in the equation.

That my $.02 cents.

ok then bert. I make peak tq at 5700 rpm(107lb-ft) and I run 205-50/15 Nankang tires. GSR tranny with 4.9 or 98' jdm ITR tranny.

From what I've seen and experiment, '98 JDM tranny gears with the 4.9 FD since your tq number is very low for you B16s. Hell, I got beat once by a B16 with nicely tight gearing, i.e. JDM ITR w/ 13" VX wheels.

But believe it or not, GSR gears with a 4.9 FD and a Quife is a nice setup with mild 1.8L stock motors I've ran across.

4.929 fd is a nice option

or a jdm fd

you might be able to find a used itr tranny with the final drive already installed, and then sell yours off

ur car doesnt rev as fast as mine either. weight will play a major factor in how fast a car goes through the gears too. as bert said too tire size is huge.

Depands on certain setups, if I was to stick with the Advans, 175-60-13...........or, the Yoko AVS, 185-60-13.
I've also ran 205-60-13 Sumo HTR and Hoosiers as well.

With 13"VX 185-60-13 and a 4.9fd, you will top out of 5th gear depanding on your 60 ft times.

few questions for you, do you have any traction problems with any of the above tire set ups? where can i buy advans tires? i'm having issues spinning 15" azenis, in all of first gear, and some of second. will this be the same senario, with the 13" tires!

Yes and no. I ran the JimFabs setup and my alignment specs. On take off, I reved at 4500rpms but I don't "pop" the clutch, I "ride" while maintaining the gas pedal at certain pressure then jaming into second trying not to chirp the tires, lol. Its something I've been acustom to and pratice all through the years. Hell, going to the track 3 times out of the week and having over 50 passes nightly helps.
You can special order them through TireRack or Sears as well. (I had the hookup at Sears).
Azenis suck *** after the first run, once it gets hot, it won't grip worth of ****. I don't know why people tend to love these tires
