Very much OT: please give blood now.
This is very much off-topic but worth it, I hope:
You all know about the hideous events that have happened today. I am very frustrated that there is nothing I can do to help except to give blood, so I'm going to do that and preach at all of you as well.
Important numbers:
1 800 GIVE LIFE (information on local donations)
1 800 283 8385 (Rhode Island Blood Center)
(401) 453-8360 (ditto)
They will be moving blood banks around so yours likely won't be used to save lives in New York / DC. It will be used right in your neighborhood to fill in the holes after they try to respond to the current crisis. The casualty numbers are going to be in the tens of thousands so they need every kind of blood they can get.

And, no, I'm not a "people" doctor. I do work for our "national defense", though, and I am truly pissed off.

Yeah, everyone should really do something to help out. I've already given blood a few weeks ago (I do however often I can), and I suggest everyone else to do the same also. We should all do whatever we can.
I'm only going to bump this to the top once.
It was only a seven hour (!) wait yesterday at the blood bank. The word is that they'll need you just as badly next week so it's cool to wait until then.
All the oreos and pizza that you can eat, time to read that book you've been meaning to get to, and a few minutes in a very comfortable chair.
It stings for a moment, about one billionth of anything anyone part of this tragedy has had to experience.
