Default What motor to put in 90-93 Teg?

Im trying to buy my friends 90-93 LS Integra for $400. It doesn't run but I'm going to swap motors and Im deciding which motor I should get. At first I was thinking cheap and getting a B-16 but to me that seems like a downgrade going from a 1.8 to a 1.6. I doubt the car will be much faster w/ the B-16 so I was thinking of getting a GSR. H motors online has the GSR motor for $1800. Also my friend, who just got a deal w/ Japanstar, can get me a complete JDM ITR for $3800 w/ engine, ECU and trans w/ LSD so I was thinking of selling the ECU and trans (seen the trans for $1500 and ECU for over $500) and end up paying about $2000-$2300 on the motor. I think spending $500 more for a Type R over a GSR would be worth it. The swap is being done for free cause Im giving my friend the LS that is in the car now and we are also changing the water pump, timing belt and headgasket. Im not sure what trans I should use and I dont want to change to hydraulic. This is a cheap simple project Im not trying to dump $ into but I figured I should start off w/ a good engine so I dont need to mod it much to get it fast. I'm guessing Ill spend abouit $4g's total on the car, motor, 60K parts, intake, header, Vtec controller, 2 1/2" exhaust w/ stock muffler and suspension (maybe close to $5G's if I have to change the trans). Im trying to keep the outside bone stock and save the rest of my money for a new car when i graduate. FYI, I believe the teg is OBD0. What ECU should I use w/ the type R or GSR motor? Also should I just change the gears in the LS trans or get a different trans? If so what trans for relatively cheap? Long gears in the LS wont do me anygood unless I went turbo, which Im not going to do anytime soon. Thanks in advance and be gentle, I'm a Honda noob.

Well if you can get your hands on a JDM ITR motor for $3800 that's a good deal along with being a good transplant. I suggest you swap the ITR motor in your car and keep the LSD tranny. Go out and buy a YS1 (GSR) tranny bell housing and swap the gears of the ITR into it. You will then have an ITR tranny in your YS1 bell housing. Your car should run like a dream with that tranny because of the short gear ratios. ECU wise I suggest you find a P28 ecu and get it rom tuned to your car's modifications. Your car will definitely be fast being stock with a couple of general bolt-ons. If you feel the need for more power upgrade your camshafts to Skunk2 stage 2 cams or the other varieties of cams out there. Good luck with the set up bro.

Cheers

Honestly the B16 will be a huge upgrade especially for the price if you install it. Other options: B18c1 huge upgrade and gain torque, H22 best of both worlds but a bitch to install.

i know this is going to cause controversy (sp?) but.....
Swapping a B16A into a heavy teg isn't really what I'd consider a upgrade. Yes, they have more hp but the torque is where it's lacking (this has been covered many times, i know). I've had the privilledge to ride in a B16A teg and I wasn't really too impressed. I've owned 2 gen 2's (both with stock b18) and It's a really close call on who's faster...

a b16 in a teg might be going from a 1.8 to a 1.6
the ls has more torque
but never the less a b16 in a teg will still be faster than an ls no matter what
the ls will be a better every driver cuz of the torque.
the b16 will suck driving around town shifting at 3k with no torque but when it come down to racing a b16 is faster than a b18a/b

i jus did the b16 swap into my teg. its nice and all but the lack of torque kinda kills it. if u can get the type-r motor that cheap, then go for it. if not buy a b20 and a tranny and drop it in.

I would keep the ITR trans but this is a cheap project. Im not trying to spend more then 5g's total cause the point of getting the teg is to have a cheap/reliable car so I can save money while Im in school and get a nicer car when I graduate. Ill probably use the p-28 but Im still not sure about the trans. This all depends on if I can sell my turbo kit and some other parts off my Eclipse. I wont get the Teg until I get rid of those parts first. Also I wont buy the ITR swap until I have a buyer for the ITR trans and ECU. If I have problems getting buyers I might just get the GSR since this is just a car to drive around. 14 sec car would be nice though which I bet I could do w/ just the stock ITR or basic boltons to GSR. You think I can get any decent times w/ the LS trans or should I definately change it?

Build the LS lol! Crower 404, PR3 pistons, YS1 tranny. Fast, Cheap, Reliable.

That's the route I'm takin cause I don't have much $$. My two pennies.

I have a built LS with ctr pistons, 278 lift cams, headwork, J1 tranny, etc etc. The car is quite fast, untuned.

Who needs vtec?

options i would contemplate:
build the NA LS (spend a lot of money to make real power)
build LS/vtec (spend a lot of money to do correctly)
get a gsr (rebuild pumps and misc stuff)
get a type r (rebuild pumps and misc stuff)
