Default Intake manifold porting...what goes into this process?

I'm not sure if when people speak of porting manifolds, is that simply match porting? Or is there more to it? Is the plenum ported any, is the casting smoothed out any?

Porters please speak up. I would really like to know more about this.

Its just as important as the head
Some of my V8 manifolds make 40hp more vrs other ported pieces
50hrs time in a mnaifold easy

brad is pretty good at keeping things short and not fully explaining what he means

with porting an IM, similar ideas are applied as to a head. runner shapes, surface of the inside. how the air curves around.

i would imagine playing with injector location can make a big difference as well if your head is ported alot and your intake manifold is different

With that manifold pictured above, did you cut the back off of it and port it that way, or did you try and get in there with the manifold completely together? I know that Endyn, and probably MAX_CFM as well, cut off the back of the manifolds, do the porting they need to, then weld the two pieces back together...

yep...

I have a Tig welder, i had to beef up the sidewalls of my plenum, because the stock casting wouldn't allow more than 3/16th of porting on the walls.. so i beefed up the walls, then dremelled them down and then did the inside and welded the cap back on and then did the outside...

skunk2 manifold have more beef to work on compared to stock manifolds.

can you find the seam ?

Dh-racing.com promises 20 whp from there stock ported manifold/68 mm tb combo. They have a dyno of making 21 whp on a stock d16z w/ a ported z6 manifold to a 68 mm tb. Very impresssive.

can you go to smooth??>
i thaught that there should be some "roughness" for turbulance
i don't know

When Brad ported my intake manifold, I cut the back off for him to speed up the process. I think that there are still some pictures of it on his web page.

What's the average cost of having this done? Is it more expensive than extrude honing?

im pretty sure that is only in the head ware you need the turbulance. its to keep the fuel in the air and prevent it from puddleing or sticking to the walls... someone corect me if im wrong

that's right.... but even at that i have a portflow head, and suprisingly its also smooth...and the motor previously made 235whp/all motor h22a. So i can't see this causing ANY problems...

i'd be interesting to see other work by RLZ or Larry....

Do you have any dyno plots to show how much HP the porting was worth?

not yet, between work, days off, GF, other dependancies and budjet .. it kinda prevented me... and since the dyno is some 700km (500) miles driving for the closest dynojet it makes it hard, running on a partial basemap from hondata s200 and running strong.. i'll go when i get to it.. built the motor completely and dropped it in my EK and converted it to standard, huge different from the stock automatic 1.6

So you made a lot of changes-no way to tell how much HP the manifold porting alone was worth. Oh well-looks nice
