2000 D16 into 89 civic??
I was wondering if the wiring would be too difficult for me to swap a 2000 sohc vtec motor d16 into a 89 4 door. Either I convert the motor to obd 0 or I convert the car to obd 2. Which would you suggest? I wanted to do auto to manual but it's too much work for now. Just wondering if anyone have done the obd conversion before? My friends said it would be pretty hard. Anyone know a website I can use as a guide?
thanks
thanks
ummm just get tha 89 si intake manifold (im pretty sure it will bolt on) than get an si or hf distributor and change the wiring from 2 point to 4 point fuel injected it shouldnt b that hard at all ohhhh yeah your gonna need obd 0 injectors also. but other than that i think thats it. did i miss anything or get anything wrong??
I don't think the swap would be too hard to pull off. You would have to start off doing the dual point to multi point wiring conversion as I am assuming that you do not have an EX. I would keep the intake manifold from the 2000 EX motor if it is at all possible due to its large size; use a 90-93 integra throttle body and most everything should match up to your civic. I have put the VTEC head on my 89 CRX and it's great! I used the intake manifold/throttle body setup I have suggested to you and have just about worked out all of the bugs (I still have an intake maniflod gasket leaking). This swap isn't too hard but to make it right you will need some experience in wiring. If you decide to go through with it and have any questions on the intake manifold/throttle body setup email me and I'll try to help. Good Luck!

what are you smoking? So you rather hurt your engine by going into VTEC when the engine is cold in the morning and not at regular operating temp? or when running in limp mode still going into VTEC possibly hurting the engine....
The only good benefit I can see about OBD0 is the CEL light on the ECU. There are SOOOOOOO many benefits of a P28 has that a PR3/PW0 do not have. For instance it doesn't look for Knock sensor, has one 4wire 02 instead of two 2wire O2's, easier to chip a P28 etc....
Anyways back to the first question:
If you want to put a d16Y8 in your car you will need to get a Z6 and a resistor box for the injetors. Don't forget your Jumper harness to convert to OBD1 either
Y8 is a better flowing intake manifold then the Z6 but the Z6 head is a little better the Y8

thanks for all the replies.
So with converting the distributer to obd 0 and p28/obd2-obd1 harness I can just use the stock 89 obd 0 engine wiring harness? Because the d16y8 don't come with wiring harness.
what else would I need?
-distributer (obd0)
-obd2 to obd 1 harness with p28
-resistor box for the injectors?? what is that for? to convert the injectors to obd 0?
anything else?? for me to keep using the stock obd 0 wiring harness?

ok, here's what i have...P28 (obd1) with a Z6 intake manifold in my Y8 engine. This way all the injectors are already OBD1 and then you just slap the corresponding Dizzy on the engine (OBD1 i believe). Now you're all set. You can buy those OBD2-1 conversion harnesses but if you do what i described above it will make your wiring a little easier. You could also do the wiring yourself if you want to save money. Just get a p28 ecu pinout and then trace all the wires. Sounds tough but it isn't, just time consuming. If you do it yourself you will learn where every sensor is and it will make fixing things down the line easier.
Just some info and my opinions...whatever you do just do it right...then go tear it up with that bad boy!

If you just want to get a OBD0->OBD1 harness contact blown90hatch, katman, or newman. They sell them on here all the time.
As far the injectors your going to need a resistor box. what it's used for is to raise impedance of the injector since the Y8 and Z6 have low inpedance injectors and your ECU requires it to be a certain impedance so you don't fry your ECU. Impedance is resistance if you didn't know that already.

He does not NEED the resistor box....he can run obd-1 or 2 injectors without the box and the car will run fine without frying the ECU (obd-0).

so what you guys are saying is that I should convert the car/motor both to obd 1?
-change the distributer on the car to obd 1
-get a obd 0 to obd 1 harness with a obd 1 ecu (ex: p28)
then I'm set? what about alternator or other stuff I need to change? because my car is a 89 LX (non vtec, obd 0). by changing to obd 1 would I need to change the wiring harness on the car to obd1?
is this the easiest way to do it? Will I be able to pass smog in california because that's the only reason why I'm doing a swap (the current motor won't pass)
