Default Stock parts on the ITR

So I am about to buy a 2000 Phoenix Yellow ITR to autocross, and drive on the road too. So my question is, how good are all of the stock parts?

Mainly the Strut Braces, I know the brakes and struts/shocks are pretty good.

If/When you guys autox, have u added coilovers, bigger brakes, etc?

I have heard spoon/comptech/mugen is the way to go if you upgrade anything suspension wise, except coilvers, which would be like TEIN or Jic,

Please give me some opinions and success/failure stories you guys have had, thanks

Josh

Stock is great. Learn the car first, then decide what (and if) you need to change anything later. I kept my car stock for two+ years (many autocross and track days) and only started to modify the car when I decided to road race the car.

All those brands you listed are good.

Stock is great, learn to drive it and upgrade. That way you will truely appreciate how good upgrades are.

So i'll be the third to say it... Learn the car first. Spend the money on the driver before the car...that said when you're ready to mod, the brands u listed are great. Always keep in the back of your head what class you want to compete in if you're autox'ing...and what you're allowed to change.

Good luck w/ the cone chasing man!

Thanks guys, I have heard nothing but positive things about this car. My first mods then are gonna be minor stuff, removing the back seat etc for weight reduction, and maybe an intake and cat back for a little more go. I will try and post again to let everyone know if/when I get the car. Thanks a million.

The back seat weighs about 10lbs...maybe 20lbs (I forget)...but,don't bother.

This is what you do with the car...keep it away from thieves...win some autocrosses...take it to a few HPDE's.

The car does respond well to mods (intake, header, exhaust, stiffer suspension, etc.... but you cannot cheap out on mods because the stock stuff is good and cheap mods are only worse.

So how would you guys suggest dropping 150-200 lbs? i was thinking carbon fiber hoof, fenders, trunk, doors, lighter racing seats, lighter wheels, and then small things like sound dampening,(don't know if the ITR has it) and carbon fiber mirrors, lighter flywheel, and such. So by nice mods, you mena paying 500 dollars for the spoon sports throttle boys, or 900 for a mugen header? Thanks Guys

ITR's are light as it is and i don't see it necessary to drop all weight when you're learning the car. also, ITR's don't have any sound deadening.

doing all those mods including lightening up your car will put you into a very competitive class for auto-x. You will end up being discouraged by how much you look bad compared to the regulars who have stock cars. There's nothing more embarrassing than losing to guys with stock cars. Trust me, at my first auto-x I felt my car had to be 'prepped' for auto-x and I got straight whooped by guys with stock cars. Now I'm on the other side of things whoopin' on newbies with modded cars. They ask what I've done to my car and the only thing I can say is that I got an alignment, stereo, tint, and stongard. After your first auto-x you will end up never coming back or you will become enlightened and realize that the driver makes the car fast not the parts that are on it. Do us this one favor and take it to an auto-x before you do anything.

You have the ultimate car.... a stock Type R. Granted there are MANY, MANY faster and better handling cars out there now, but at the time of the ITR (1997-2001) you couldn't find a car that was cheap ($24K) and keep up with $50K sports car on a track or autocross.

http://www.thscc.com for autocrosses in NC.

CarGuys runs a lot of events at regional tracks for HPDE, as does NASA-VA

ditto...and with a few mods be able to repeatedly pass Vettes, Vipers, Porsches, etc on the track. Normally, there are only 2-5 cars out of 35-80 per event that are faster than my full interior, azenis clad R. In fact, those 2-5 are usually instructors or true race cars.

I suck as a driver, but the R can fly on a road course...

david - are you coming out to Phoenix for the next Expo?? I didn't see you last year at BeaveRun.

stock rear itr seat is 28.5 lbs, both top and bottom. but, as everyone said, drive the car stock. because if you pull the rear seat, into SM you go.....

I was Expo 2 and Expo 3... I guess I was laying low

I highly doubt I can make it out to Phoenix.

LISTEN TO US. leave the car alone- Just besure your tires are good and your brake pads.

I have only changed what was nessary on my R- But I have no plans to mod it cause driving it stock on a RoadCourse is sick fun!

here is a small video of how much fun it is on a course: http://www.we-todd-did-racing....DE%3D

That clip is amazing Bbasso, it looks like soooo much fun. So basically I can get me an ITR, do nothing (minus regular maintanance, good brake pads) and tinting the indows And I am ready to start. I am looking forward to becoming a good driver, and seeing what the ITR can do, I hope that guy lets me see it and buy it next week...

after a year or two when you're comfortable with the car you may wanna consider getting the JDM final drive. It makes the gearing so much better for autocrosses and such. It's an expensive mod if you gotta pay someone to install it and you won't be in stock or even STX anymore, but if you're not concerned with the category you're in it's a phenomenal mod to do. I personally don't have to worry about classes because no one around here really pays much attention to what class you're in, just how fast you are, but hey this is Hicksville.

And make sure you have fresh brake fluid. (If you're going to flush and put in new fluid, you could go to a high-temperature brake fluid like Cobalt or Motul. But that's the only "mod" I would bother doing, and it's about as much of a "mod" as using synthetic motor oil. IOW, not really a mod at all.)
