unplug the battery 1st
Its pretty straigh forward, I did mine in that dark in about 1 hour.
Check the connection to your solenoid first....if its disconnected you could get the same symptoms.

Any tips on taking it out? Are there any suprises to watch out for?</TD></TR></TABLE>
there are two bolts that hold it in. Disconnect the battery and the starter ground. Should only take 20 minutes at the most. One of the bolts that hold the starter in is pretty long and it holds the tranny in too so dont be alarmed if you keep turning it and it doesn't seem like it's not going anywhere.

Yeah do that, my old Camry did that a few times, and my dad taught me that trick of tapping the starter w/ a hammer.

if you can try to do the 2nd gear starting with the key on the "on" position down a hill. if it starts then, probably your starter...sometimes your starter is stuck so you can also give it a couple of knockings with a metal bar. and then try...also battery terminals might be lose

why would that happen? I meant tap the body of the starter itself, not the power wire terminal
You don't need to disconnect the battery just to tap the starter, and no sparks will not fly.

Check the igntion coil, because the same thing happened to me. To check if the igintion coil is working you're going to have to get an Ohm meter and check the resistance across the primary and secondary points.

Yes but I like NAPA better... Better testing tools.
