Default BRAKE question mushy brakes

Brake question to stop my car I have to put the brake pedal to the metal and its real mushy and I can't register my car in maryland unless I PASS the inspection. And the dude that did the inspection said I have to replace my whole master cylinder in order to correct this problem to pass the inspection. I'm a rookie and really don't want to play with my brakes well not yet anyway . So any idea what could the problem be or a solution that does not involve replacing my master cylinder it would really take away from my rotor and brake pad upgarde budget.

check the fluid level in the master cylinder. you could have a leak somewhere.

You could try bleeding the brakes and make sure there's no air in the lines. A mushy pedal usually is a sign of a master cylinder going bad. Doesn't mean it is though.

bleed the lines, check the pad thickness... then go for the mc or maybe booster failure.

this happened to me, got a type r mc and brake booster, but beware the fitting going into the master cylinder is different than my stock on so i also had to replace this. By the way i LOVE the feel of the type r master cylinder, much better pedal control
