Do H22A's see any real benefit from cam gears on stock cams?
Eventually I am going to be getting my car dyno tuned. So I'm just wondering if tuning cam gears would be a worthwile performance mod.
Mods will be:
-AEM CAI
-GReddy header
-A'PEXi RS exhaust
-A'PEXi V-AFC
I think I'm going to order AEM pulleys also soon. But should I consider getting some Skunk2 cam gears? They are a good deal on the GBC right now.
What are your experiences/knowledge with cam gears on the H22A?

I noticed a nice gain down low when I retarded the exhaust cam about 3°. I took it to 4°, but the power then drops of high too early... The exhaust cam seems to produce more gains, at the time I only had that one gear on.
For turbo'd cars, it helps deal with overlap; to keep that pressure in
I think they would be a good mod for you if you plan on dyno tuning the vafc...

<--- dyno tuning a VAFC and cam gears this weekend!
)What kind of gears did u get?
I've had the Unorthodox Racing Ultra Race (whatever) cam gears for a few months now. Very nice set, and I've had 0 problems out of them. I've toyed with them, but my butt dyno cuts out over 250 hp. lol so I couldn't tell what I was getting or losing.
retarding the exhaust cam huh? I noticed the best gain leaving the EX alone and Advancing the Intake cam too +2.. Well, i gotta take them off for the honda challenge next year, so the will be for sale soon.. but yes, they will give you substantial improvements in the H22

I always hear the B series guys talking about retarding exhaust... and
the H series guys talking about advancing intake... so perhaps these engines respond differently. (I don't have cam gears yet, but I want the Crowers 'cause I think they look the coolest
)As for JG... you're asking us? You're so above and beyond us <200 WHP guys we look to you for guidance...

I think you guys are a bit confused. apexii has a TURBO Prelude. Retarding his EXH cam helped retain some boost...therefore made more HP from the extra pressure in the cylinders.
For an all-motor setup, I would think advancing it would help out more. BUT, there's a certain limit to how much advance you should go, since you sacrifice exhaust scavenging and backpressure. And the ONLY way to know how far to go is on the dyno.
Every car responds differently to mods. What works for someone, might not work for someone else with a different setup. The best thing to do is spend $75-100 for some dyno time. You'll realize ACTUAL hp gains, instead of "guessing" how much hp you actually gained from your mods.

It was with my N/A bolt-on h22a(which ran 14.2-14.1's btw

As for wether it's the B or H motor, the general theory still remains the same: overlap. Retarding the exhaust and advancing the intake seems to be the general idea, although changing one will have a direct effect on the other. I put my one gear on the exhaust, and without-a-doubt noticed a low-end increase. At the time money was tight, and I noticed other people getting power out of the exhaust, so I got the one. Looking back, I wish i would have gotten both. Now my prelude has oem gears so go figure!

this thread is getting good
Have any of you any experience with advancing your H22A's timing? I'm thinking about doing that as well.

Advancing timming does wonders if your careful! I have mine at +20.. If I run it at the factory setting, I feel NO power.. It feels like an EX CIVIC. I have yet to hear a ping (but only the loud pings you can hear).. Just don't go toooo far with it..

Man I was just checking out the Unorthodox Racing web site. $509.00 a pair for the Ultra TR sprockets. That's nucking futs!
I have a friend that is selling two new Ultra TR sprockets for $300. I would buy them but like Honda318dx my engine has to stay relatively stock for road racing.
