Default Oil Leak: Can it leak from head gasket?

I'm looking around my car, and I have a small oil leak that seems to be getting bigger. I can't trace the source. But it looks kinda like it's coming from where the head gasket is. I can see a small film of oil all the way around. How can this happen? Probally someone didn't know how to torque down a head or change the headgasket. I'm really not certain how the oil travels from the block to the head or the passages

Will changing out the headgasket cure this?

Thanks

Danny

yes it will leak - if the head is not torqued down correctly, it will leak

edit: - changing the head gasket will fix it if you torque it down correctly, with my b20 we did a 32ft lbs, then a 54ft lbs, then 75ft lbs..and mine seems to be doing good, no leaks after 5k miles

I wouldnt drive it, if the head is loose, it will lift and maybe tear the threads for the head bolts out of the block.

if you change the head gasket, you might want to check the head and block to make sure neither is warped.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I drove it around today and looked under the car again to see if i could trace the leak. The leak is coming from behind the oil pan somewhere.

Looks to be towards the rear of the car, and it drips down towards the front of the oil pan and down to the ground.

Is there anything back there that could cause the leak? The only thing I can think of is the oil filter?

edit: i should check my oil feed t=line...that could easily be it!!!

I don't know if you've done this yet, but clean out the engine and surrounding areas where you think the oil is leaking with carb cleaner. Then see if the oil is really coming out from where you think it's coming.

Okay,

Turns out it's the camseal behind the intake sprocket. It's leaking pretty badly, a steady stream of oil basically.

How hard is it to change this thing? Basically a timing belt change...although that isn't that basic?
