Skunk 2 cams VS type r cams
I know this has to have been discussed but I do a search...I have a 2001 gsr with basic bolt-ons i/h/e v-tec controller what cams do you think would make the most power with what I have....Skunk 2 stage 1's or the type r cams
i have skunk2 stage1's in my gsr ... love em only tyhinig is they cost a lil more than the type-r cams but do make more power... if ur interested in skunk2 stage1 cams let me know i can get them pretty cheap

skunk2 will make more power but isnt it recommend that your upgrade your valvetrain if you are using skunk2's? you can use your stock valvetrain with itr cams.. which I am looking to get.
They recommend it with all of their cams but they say that you will be fine using stock with stage 1's. Stage 2-3 need new valvetrain since they make power much higher in the rpm range.

Im running E/H/I and Itr Type R Cams, i didnt have to change anything and it is the same as the Stage 1 Skunk 2's. But my friend has the exact as me with Stage 1 cams and i dont feel a difference, at all. Its all personal preference.

if your saying you don't feel the power difference then thats very understandable. There isn't that great of a difference between the 2. Its not so much of a difference that you'll be able to tell just by riding in the car. The dyno numbers will be slightly better after tuning. Also, you and your buddy don't have the same exact motor, yes both are b18c1's but one may be stronger then the other, and one may have a better header then the other. One may react to mods better then that other, etc. There are quite a few differences to even come close to comparing. But feeling a difference between 2 cams that are pretty similar is tough. I have ITR cams and I can handle a GSr with skunk2 stage2's if its not fully modded like mine is. Im pushing 190whp and I have a 2,400lb GSR, I can handle a decent amount of turbo cars aswell. Too bad ill only have that power for about another week......I've ventured over to the darkside and gone turbo myself

It's not preference, this isn't about having "ARR cams" or skunk2 cams just to say you have one of the two. The butt dyno won't tell you which is stronger, on a dyno can do that. There is a difference but it isn't strong enough to feel a dramatic difference between the two while driving.

From what I have read and heard form many people, Skunk2 stage 1, and ITR cams put out about the same amount of power, stick with the OEM part more reliable. I was talking to this guy last week, that had S2S1 cams in an H22 in an EG, he told me that he cracked one of his cam shafts, while he was running. That says stick with the ITR cams.

I dunno man, maybe you can own stage2'd gsr's untuned and on a shitty day. As for the turbo cars, I agree partially with you on that. You can probably beat a few since you have 190 whp, I know of someone with a SOHC VTEC del sol that only runs mid 14's. Cars like that, yea, but there is no way you are gonna roll with a turbo'd GSR or anything greater than that. Granted both drivers are equal.

About the same power, yes, on the butt dyno. As for the cam breaking, that's probably the installers fault.

Doing about 190 whp pre-pistons on Skunk2 Stage 1's right now. Just VAFC tuning. Whether or not they feel alot different than ITR's, they are much more powerful.

Do you have a reason for saying not to get ITR cams.....
ITR cams (oem reliability, great midrange to upper power). Probably the best bang for your buck cam on the market. All cams are also more powerful after you tune them. Just slapping them on is a good power increase, but the tune definately adds to their potential.

Well lets see. In my days at the track I have taken down: a few turbo GSR's, a bunch of ITR's, GSX and GST eclipses, TSI talon, SR20DET in one of my friends nx's. On the street I have taken an SRT-4 and plenty other cars. I have a wonderful thing called a camera too to witness all the track events and mostly all of my street races. I'd say thats quite a few turbo cars for an All Motor teg. I know I can get my *** handed to me by most turbo cars, but that by all means doesn't mean all of them. Its take quite a bit more hp from a turbo car to beat a 190whp all motor car. Especially since i've got an lsd and can launch my car very effectively. I've got a Type R tranny to go along with it for great gearing. Yes, I know ill have more power once I go turbo, but that won't ever take away what 190 vtec whp sounded like...and by all means how it pulled

What would you guys recommend getting in conjunction with type R cams. I have I/H(jdm 4-1)/E/Cat. Do i need to build the engine anymore? Maybe a VAFC? Can you tune that yourself or is it recommended to take it to a dyno.
VAFC and\or skunk2 intake manifold.
Best to get it dyno tuned because every car is different. You could end up with as little as 0-5 hp from tuning or up to 10-12 with those cams. You will need adjustable cam gears too

Hey man i got type R cams in my GS-R and I like them alot. They are not as agressive as skunk 2 but they made my car about 2 or 3 car links faster on my car with intake and exhast. If you get Skunk 2 intake mainfold your top end is nasty my car has I/H/E intake mainfold and type R cams and vtec controller now and my car with the cams and intake mainfold my car hit vtec and kick and it kicks again about 6100 rmps because of the cams and intake mainfold. But skunk 2 might be faster but i have no interials and i take my car to 8300 or so sometimes and it has had no prombles yet.
