Default Tranny Question

I've been looking for an 88 Si tranny for my Y8 crx and have come across one with a patch on it. Seller says it has been on there for a while and is not leaking. Is something like this a big deal on a tranny? or should i be ok with it? I have an 88 Dx tranny now so maybe i could swap out the gears and use the Dx case. Either way has anyone ever heard of a patched tranny?

Thanks,
VINCE

I have seen it once and I saw it fail once.
I would not like that on my car. I say keep looking.

I don't want to waste a perfectly good stage 2 clutch by switching to a 91 si tranny...even though there are a lot more out there. The clutch/tranny on there now are 88 so i'm trying to find a match for the clutch.

Would i be able to easily swap the 88 Si gears into my 88 Dx case?

Thanks,
VINCE

I have a haynes but could grab a helms. I mean is it something i could do with just a tool set and the two tranny's or would i need to get new seals of some sort or bearings? Any special grease needed? Would it take me 2 hours? 5 hours?

Basically i want to know if it is too much for me to jump into or would a helms manual do the trick for some one who's never opened a tranny.

Thanks,
VINCE

hmmm wait a min...if the outside of the Si case has a crack...and the Dx case is fine, couldn't i just swap the bell housings without messing with the internals at all?

Thanks,
VINCE

the 88 DX case is different from the Si, I believe. The Si uses larger differential bearings, so the castings are larger. <-------Mistabone, correct me if I'm wrong.

I would just post a WTB for an Si case, or busted Si tranny. There's a ton out there.
