VTI hatch rear side glass
someone is claiming online that the JDM rear side glass is significantly lighter than the USDM. is this true?
after 11 years and 250k+ miles, the rear side glass on my hatch is scratched to hell and pitted with crap, so i'm looking to replace em. if i can drop a few pounds by using the JDM glass, all the better.

Dont' know about the JDM one. I just ordered Lexan rear quarter windows. They were cut to big though so I haven't installed them yet. Without cutting them to size they are about 1 lb lighter. I'm looking probably another 6 oz after I cut them. Between the 2 windows that's gonna be nearly 3 lbs. Could probably save just as much weight going to the bathroom before a race :-p My windows were busted out though, and the lexan was actually cheaper.
I call bullshit on that one..
The only reason you would get japanese glass is for the OEM Bronze tint..
Go to a wreckes and find a front end collision civic and rape it for parts..

I don't think it's BS... I know that when you import a vehicle into the states you have to replace ALL the glass on the vehicle. Reason being is because it's not shatter proof. So with the extra junk in the window to hold the glass together if it gets smashed, I would say that USDM windows might be a little heavier than JDM windows.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't imagine the weight difference being substantial between the two.

It's not. You've got shatterproof film and bonding chemicals and maybe a slightly more dense glass in the USDM's. It's not going to save you more than maybe 1 pound per window. My dad's a chemist who works primarilly with silicates and casting materials (as well as lightweight polymer plastics like LEXAN) and he doubts that Japanese glass is structurally different enough from USA glass to have any sort of impact.
Just get whatever's cheaper and roll with it.

last time i checked (which happened to be christmas eve '02 when my wife's car got broken into) a hammer easily shatters side windows. i don't see how "shatter resistant" glass makes a difference if i get in an accident, either

I know this is off subject, but does anyone know how to remove and replace the rear side glass in a 93 DX. I did a search, and this was the only link that was remotely close. I pulled out the seal on the outside and the plastic panels on the inside, but is the window sealed in or bolted/clipped in? Any help is appreciated.
