Default car doesn't go into gear when running

i took the car up to about 3.5-4k rpms in second gear and pressed the clutch pedal and the rpms didn't drop down. Took it home and turned it off and can go through all the gears just fine without the car running. Turn it on, can only get it into first if the car is rolling and have to rev-match the other gears.
time for a new clutch?

bingo. you probably broke the clutch disc. those springs fall out, and get stuck between the pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel and won't let you disengage the clutch enough to get it into gear. but of course, it will go fine while off.
