Default EnGiNe BuIlDeRs PlEaSe HeLp!!!

I just droped my rebuilt b16 in my eg today. I had to get my block bored/honed due to a gouge on one of my cylinder walls. In doing so, I also got new pistons/rings because of the overbore. I also got new bearings and had the block decked just for peace of mind. I am just breaking it in and trying to decide at which point I can expect it to stop burning oil. I've got about 40 miles on the new motor so far and it seems to be burning more oil than I would like. Here's my setup.

-b16 block, fresh bore/hone, new pistons/rings/bearings
-b18c head, very mild port, skunk valve springs/retainers, gsr cams (skunks to some soon)

other than that, it's pretty stock. I've got msd ignition/blaster 3 coil. Skunk intake mani and the normal I/H/E. I've also got AEM cam gears, but they are set to zero.

The cams are from a different motor, so I am not exactally sure about my valve clearances, would that make a difference? I installed my rings by the book as far as gap location. My ring gaps looked good. They weren't where I would like them, but they are within spec according to the book.

If there is anymore info you guys would need to give me a hand or just put my mind to rest, I would be happy to help and I appreciate it in advance.

thanks

clark

how much oil we talking about? is there any smoke coming out the exhaust? if so what color? is the oil black yet? and to what was the block bored out to? having the piston rings not on correclty can cause excessive amounts of oil to be burned. would like to hear a reply.

It's mostly in the upper rpm ranges. Say 5000+. Not a whole lot from idle up to there. It's definately oil, grey/blue, and it smells of oil. Since I've only got 40 miles, I haven't even checked the oil color. The block was bored .40 over, so it's about 82.5ish right now. The rings are on correctly, I tripple checked that, they are good.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

see how much oil you have burned. then what did you gap the piston rings to? you did not reuse piston rings did you? your block is bored to 82.5? stock is 81mm and over bore pistons are .25 over. you sure you got your specs right. I stilll stand that it is the piston rings. I have seen it happen. I can only help so much without looking at the motor so sorry if it does not to seem much of a helping hand

you check the back of the block to make sure its not leaking oil else where?

u might want to run a catchcan to see if its putting oil into the intkae manifold

Do a leak down and a compression check and that will tell all

1 To see if rings are seating

2 To see if the bores are done correctley (out of round)

3 Or other problems might be happening

Who did the finish hone on the block. The Honda motor is very unforgiving if the finish is wrong. We finish all our motors with 280 .

I checked the ring gaps and they're within spec according to the book. The pistons and the rings came as matched set so. . . . . I'll check for oil leaks tomorrow when I'm tinkering with my friggin IACV (stupid fluc. idle on motors!!! ). I'm not sure about the finish hone, I'll give my machinist a call and see what he used. After I get a few hundred miles on the motor, I'm going to recheck my valve clearances and then do a leakdown/compression test. I'll keep ya posted .

Any other input would help a great deal . I have already had this motor out three times and appart twice. I hope I don't have to do it again. I'm tryin to learn as much as I can so the more ya help, the better off I'll be.

thanks

try some non-detergent oil and run the car hard (when it's warmed up of course).

I second that suggestion, hopefully you didnt use too much moly grease on your bearings. And if that doesn't work, sorry man, your gonna have to rehone the block.

As for all of the oil comments, I'm using Penzoil 10w30 regular right now. When you talk about non-detergent oil, what do you mean, just an oil with no detergents in it? Do you recommend any brands? Should I switch to 5w30?

How hard should I run the car. It's got about 170 miles on it now and it's not burning as much oil, but still a lil much for my taste.

And for the rings, I can't remember the brand, but again, it's a OE replacement type of ring so. . .

Thanks for the comments and keep em commin.

Wal-mart. Accel non-detergent 30wt. Provided that where you live is not too cold <50F.

well I've got cast pistons so. . . . I've gotten on it a few times, but never a redline run and never WOT. I know from listening I need to adjust my valves. Will this help oil consumption at all??

bump for all the comments. thanks guys

bump for turning 21 today!!!! I need another

Drive it for while and try to stay under 5k (stop and go). You don't have enough miles on it to tell yet. You have to give the rings time to seal. Recheck compression after you have about 500 miles on it. Good Luck.
