Default Orange Peel in New Paint

Whats up? I just got my car painted and I was looking to save a few bucks. I went with an acrylic enamel instead of a base coat clear coat. I did save a lot of money but it has much more orange peel than I expected. The hood, roof, and trunk look good but the door, fenders, and quarters have all the orange peel.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of some of the orange peel. I am realistic and know I cant get rid of all of it. Thanks!

I wouldn't mess with it. Especially wet sanding it. Do you know how much clear they sprayed. You might not have enough to wetsand. Call the guys at http://www.meguiars.com they should know.

I called the place that painted it and he said a wetsand will make a big difference. But he wants to wait a few months. He said it is more effective if the paint has time to cure.

That is a load of BS. A car can be wetsanded the following day after it is painted. The orange peel is more likely a product of the prep work. Was the whole car primered before painting? If so it is likely that they did not take enough steps before painting the car. My friend, who painted my car, told me that most bodyshops only sand down the primer using 400 and go right into paint. This will cause an orange peel type effect, but saves mad time and money. When he taught me how to do the prep work, I blocked my car with 400 and then wetblocked the whole car in 800. I preped my EF and another friends EF, both are flawless. Neither one needed wetsanding, but we did anyway with 1500 and they are perfect.

I would have the shop do the wetsanding ASAP. BTW how much did you pay for a complete paint?

Can a 1 stage enamel paint be wetsanded right away though? Its not base coat clear coat. I dont want to say what I paid for the whole job. It will make you think its even nastier. It looks "OK" but not great. Its all one color and shiny and thats more than it was!

My friend's EF that I preped this summer used to be single stage enamel, but it looked really nice. The finished product is all a reflection of the prep work. I worked in my friends paintshop this summer and learned more than most people learn from two years of autobody class. The main difference is that they just don't shine the same way the base coat clear coat can. Also, the color is not as deep.

It doesn't matter if it is single stage or base clear. It can be wetsanded and buffed within a day of painting. If a slow dry activator was used, it might have to wait two days. The main thing that most people recommend against is waxing the vehiclle tto much. After wetsanding and buffing, I applied a coat of Collinite wax and the car was just amazing. My painter then told me to wait 30 days to wax it again. Also when waxing the best thing I have ever come across is the use of 'microfiber' towels. They leave absolutely no scratches.

I had my car painted single stage and i was told to wait 2 months before wet sanding it. The risks of sanding a single stage from what I understand is the shine might become more dull. You also risk the chance of sanding through the paint since you dont have a clear coat on top of the base. Hopefully the paint you have on your car is thick. I would go with a 2000 grit and buff after, some nice liquid wax and live with it. I do believe that the prep work is to blame for orange peel.

Can you post some pics of your car? try getting some good angles that will show the reflection. Thanks
