Trunk (Boot) locked on an '02 RSX Type-S
We have an '02 RSX on which the trunk will not open. It is not damaged, we have tried the remote and the passsenger door key hole but cannot get it open. Nor can we find the manual release for the hatch. Any suggestions?
Please let me know if there is an easy solution.
Thanks, Bill

Hello, Yes the seats fold down, unfortunately there is no obvious way to release the trunk from the inside. When I click the locks, you can hear the latch mechanism un-hitching, but the trunk stays shut.
Thanks for your help everyone- Looks like a job for ACURA service...

i beleive alot of newer cars have an emergency realease latch from the inside. Thus i mentioned folding down the seats. But i'm not sure if the DC5 has that option.

I just looked in the ISIS network at work and there is no info on getting into the hatch area another way, you may have to find a way to get the trim panel off and manually pull the release cable then remove and check the locking mechanism.
Sorry I can't be of any help. Try and fold the seats forward and then remove the cargo-cover then you can see the little "door" thats about just in front of the latch assembly. try removing that and see whats inside.

Just to check, you did try the handle right behind the trunk "hand" cut out right? The place where the bumper meets with the rear hatch.
Edit: That's where the RSX hatch release handle is located if you didn't know this already.

VAPOR LOCK.... WTF....
There isn't a manual release for the trunk. I've been al over the web-site and in the shop manual. You are going to have to go into through the little door on the inside and try and pull the cable with a pair of needle-nose pliers of a sort.

Regardless, I agree with the person who wrote "WTF" in response to the suggestion of "vapour lock". Unless this is some sort of obscure brand name for trunk latches, vapour lock cannot occour where the only components are cables and pulleys.
Weenie.
For the record, this is my first and last smart *** answer.
Thanks to everyone who had actual rational suggestions. I've decided to cover the car with tin foil to prevent alien control of the hatch via directed beams of cosmic energy, and to deflecct the ever present threat of solar flares.

Shouldn't your warranty cover that? You are located in the 905 area? So you bought your car at either Acura Erin Mills or Brant(Burlington)?(just assuming) I suggest Erin Mills, there service is much better. Even if it isn't covered by warranty they would be pretty rude not to service you. *One last thing: Erin Mills you usually have to make an apointment a week ahead, they are really busy. Hope things work out, good luck.

You do have a rubber gasket that seals the hatch from the outside, correct? I'm not sure if "water vapor lock" is the correct term, but that's what i was referring to when i made the above statement about vapor lock (a suction effect caused by the rubber gasket). On my old '90 4 door civic, if i didn't open the trunk for a while, it would take some force to open the trunk. It was because the rain caused the trunk gasket to seal up tightly.
You guys can think i'm stupid or whatever, but i was only trying to help you out. I know for a fact this DOES occur when you have a rubber gasket sealing your trunk. I was never talking about the latch itself if you look at my statements up above. For one, you actually said that when you hit the lock, the trunk release sounded like it unlocked. I can actually READ unlike some other folks on this board.
Like i said earlier. Hold the hatch handle down and try pulling up harder on the hatch. Either way. Good luck.
PS: I still don't get why you're trying to fix it youself when you can just take it back to Acura under warranty?

OK that makes more sense- I've never heard of Vapour Lock in relation to anything but a fuel system. It is a hatchback though and is not sealed.
I have an appointment with an Acura dealer this afternoon- I'll re-post when I finally figure it out, in case it happens to someone else.
(if this appears to be smart-assy it was not the intention of the Author, OK Tampa?)
