ZC tranny question, I've tried search
I got my dohc ZC engine thursday and after cleaning realized that it was an 88 model. Well the clutch and flywheel I purchased were for the 90-91 model (20 splines) My question is can I use the 90-91 flywheel with the 88-89 clutch?
No. The 91 flywheel has a larger circumfrence than the 88 style clutch. And the 91 clutch you bought will not fit on to your 88' style 21 spline tranny. The year of the engine has no bearing, as both style flywheels will bolt up....you must use either all 88' style flywheel/clutch/trans combo, or all 91 style flywheel/clutch/trans combo.
Shitty. Do you know somewhere I can purchase a 90-91 Zc tranny and have it shipped overnight? My car has no engine in it and I need to have it running by wednsday. I really don't have the money for another flywheel/clutch setup, and I'm sure its cheaper to buy a used tranny.
what year is your car? transmission? are you sure it is 88 model ZC? the date on the head is the date the head was manufactured - a lot of 89's have 88 on the head - if you have a 90-91 flywheel and clutch, it will work on any DOHC engine and any 89-91 transmission, just won't work with 88 transmission

Umm? That doesnt make sense to me. You would rather spend the money on another tranny and OVERNIGHTING it, than to just buy a clutch disc that is the 90-91 size??? A.C.T. has a clutch disc that has 21 splines, but is the 90-91 diameter.
You could just buy the disc itself, but heck, you mind as well buy the whole A.C.T. clutch package with pressure plate and all.
After all, you were going to spend money on another tranny just because of the 21 spline count, AND ship it OVERNIGHT!!
Crazy! Crazy, I tell ya!!

What I reallly need is a 21 spline clutch that is the 90-91 size, sooo, I suppose I could buy that ACT clutch. and use the 90-91 flywheel, right? That is what you're saying?

the transmission input shaft is what determines the spline count.
The reason i wanted the tranny is becuase my brother and i perform surgery on 88 trannies, replacing the 88 input shaft with one from a 90-91 engine, and thus making the 88 tranny a 90 or 91. I've done it on 3 88 Si trannies so far with luck.

Correct!! Call ACT and tell them you want a "88" upgrade disc. Tell them you already have the 90-91 size flywheel and pressure plate and all you need is the disc.
If I recall, the disc should be the same disc that is used on a 2nd gen Prelude, 87 and older.
I did this upgrade years ago for one of my customer's ZC swaps.

Thanx for all the help fellas, I'm putting my ZC in tomorrow. We pulled the A6 out today. This is the first swap I've ever done and let me tell you, the shift linkage pin was a motherbitch! Took me two hours to get it out.
