Default Changing the alternator belt?

The shop manual has a specific method and deflection that should be observed for the belt. Something like 7-9 mm for 22lbs...any idea how to ghetto check this?

Once the belt is put on, try and twist the belt. It shouldnt twist more than 90 degrees, or if your looking at the belt from above (belt is flat) when you twist it it should not be able to go past being vertical (up and down). Heh, hope that made sense.
