why do you want a longer gear ratio/final drive, ls or gsr transmission for a turbo car? why a shorter gear ratio/final drive for all motor, type r transmission? what is the definition of gear ratio and final drive?

Here's what you want...

For Turbo: Close Gear Ratios, with a Final Drive that will let you make max mph in 4th gear on whatever slicks you run.

For All-Motor: Same thing...Although depending on the powerband of the motor, you may want that 5th gear shift.

What this means is, you usually want to run a b16\ITR trans in all cases...and gear with slick size accordingly. In a Turbo Car, ITR Trans w\ 4.4 is going to be perfect in most cases.

In an All-Motor car, ITR Trans w\ 4.785 depending on slick size\power level.

The specifics can be argued, but we can all pretty much agree that the LS trans sucks the Big Dick for everything.

 

what are closed gear ratios/final drive? not sure about turbo cars but i heard that you don't want to enter 5th in all motor, no so sure. your opinion is to stick with a B16 or ITR transmission in all cases. i know some all motor cars that run ATS 4.9 final drive, why is that?
