Default Re-clearcoating

I recently bought some rims and the clearcoat on the lips is chiped and worn in some spots. I've heard of guys re-clearcoating rims with a spray can, but don't know the details i'd need to do it myselp (prep included). I searched and came up with nothing. If anyone has done this before, help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It depend on how bad the chipping is. I would imagine that the wheels are painted under the clear. If that is the case then as long as the paint has not been damaged you can wet sand them with 1500 grit and re-clear them. Try not to sand into the color if there is any. If you do they will need to be sanded down and repainted base coat and clear coat. HTH

The lip is painted silver the same as the rims. How can i tell when i've sanded all the clearcoat down, or will it just be obvious with the naked eye?

The thing I don't get is how does it look at great again since the clear was sanded dull and clear was sprayed over ?? wouldint that layer of dull clear block the color ?

no sir. the top clear layer wil bond to it and the roughness of the sanded layer will superset onto the new clear top layer. just wet sand that down and buff it to a nice shine.

the trick is sanding hte chips smooth and then reclearing so the whole wheel looks smooth.

The only way to tell if you've hit the color is if it starts comming off when you sand. The wet stuff you sand will be the color of the paint. If this happens then you need to redo them. When sanding the clear it will be milky white. You probably need to sand them down and re-paint them. I can't tell you cause I can't see what they look like. Get a few pics if you can.

The only reason you are sanding it with super fine Wet or Dry paper is so the paint has something to stick to. Paint does not stick to slick surfaces. As far as the clear geting dull, its not going to effect the outcome. Sounds wierd but thats how it works. After you shoot a few coats of clear. You can wet sand it with 1500 and put on a few more coats. The hit them with a 1500-2000 grit or so and compound them then buff. BTW I don't reccomend Clear in a can. Get the good stuff with a high temp activator that has to be sprayed through a paint gun. HTH

you can even wetsand with like 600-1000 but it takes a lot more buffing to get it glossy.

it will tak a long time to sand those but it can be done. expect about 2 hours of sanding and then repainting / clearing. it looks like its through the paint.
