Tranny Question - Mista?
I have an 88 CRX DX with a D16y8 inside but still rockin the Dx tranny. Before the swap a new Stage 2 clutch was put in which is still in great condition. I want to swap for an Si tranny and everyone has been telling me to bump up to a 90-91 Si tranny. The clutch bolts up to the flywheel if i'm correct so i was just wondering if...
1. I could just pop on a 91 Si tranny with that existing clutch or would i have to use a different clutch. (I dont think i can do this just checking
)
2. If not should i just use and 88 Si box or are the 91's that much better and i should swap clutch?
Lastly, once i am able to get to the tranny can i just unbolt it and take it off? is there anything else i have to do? Don't flame me we were all here once!
Thanks in advance!

heh, to tell you the truth i'm having a simmilar problem i have a hydro tranny motor like you (b16a2) and i wanted to use a cable tranny as well.
the biggest issue is the fact that your d16y8 mates to a hydro tranny stock and the 90-91 trany will most certainly be cable.
i'll let you know what i find out.
i see no reason for any flaming here, you wanted to know somthing and so you asked.

ok to the first post no you cant use the 88 clutch in a 90-91 si tranny different spline count.... pt 2 the other guy i know for a fact the hasport makes a hydro to cable tranny conversion for the cars ...so have fun
1 - No. The '90-91 tranny's have a different spline count than the '88, so you cannot use an '88 clutch on a 90-91 tranny. You'll need a newer clutch (89+).
2 - I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to ask? You can just use a '88 Si tranny with no problems. All 88-91 Si's are essentially the same, but there aren't really any drawbacks from using an older '88 model. I have heard that the newer '90-'91's might be a tiny bit stronger than the 88 and 89, but not much. Either way it won't be an issue, unless you're pumping out a lot of power. IMO, if you want to keep your current clutch, go after an '88 Si tranny.
3 - Installation is exactly the same as the DX tranny. Just unbolt the old one, then plug in the new Si tranny. (I recommend you at least get a Haynes/Chiltons manual if you have never done this before... Helms is even better!)
Have fun.

There are a couple downsides to the 88 trannies. First, finding one. Second, you will have a smaller diameter clutch than with a 90-1. Third, if you are interested in a flywheel your choices are slightly narrrowed. ACT makes a conversion clutch kit for the 88 to convert to the larger diameter disc while retaining the smaller spline, so that could be an option down the road if you went 88 and wanted to upgrade flywheel/clutch later. But really these are all small sacrifices and not a large issue.
for right now i'm just gonna try to hunt down an 88 si so i don't waste a good clutch...if i can't find one...darn i guess i'll be stuck with my Dx tranny til i need a new clutch. Then i can do the 91 if that's what i want when the time comes. If anyone see's an 88 Si tranny let me know please!
THanks again!
