Will a brown top ZC or D16A1 engine bolt to an 87 CRX Si tranny?

First off, yes I have searched. And searched. And searched! Maybe a dozen or so online forums and countless hundreds of posts. Yes I've read Wes Kramer's article and many others that say "swap the whole engine, drivetrain and front suspension" but they never say the early brown top ZC/D16A1 won't bolt to the 87 tranny. So if you are going to reply "use the search" you needn't bother because I've done that, or if you do I would encourage you to use this opportunity to make me look like a dumbass and to actually SHOW me where to find it or what search term to use. A lot of people say "search" but don't tell you that you will have to read thru 1267 posts to find what you are looking for, or they just *think* it was covered previously but it wasn't.
The reason that I'm asking this question is because I keep seeing conflicting information about this. So far I've found
It will work
It won't work
It might work
4 of 5 bolts line up, maybe, or something like that
Sooo, with that in mind, *puts on flame suit* please respond only if you have first hand experience doing this or your info comes from a VERY reputable source. And please, please try to be as specific as possible i.e. which bolt won't line up or is it an input shaft alignment problem, not just "No". Don't post if your cousin's girlfriend's brother said he saw someone do it. Don't post to say "search" (see above) because the info found is conflicting. Post only if you have useful information to contribute. I don't mean to sound rude but I've read a LOT of threads lately with like 20 posts and 19 of them are useless "blah, blah, blah, someone said" time wasters from post ******. Please try to stay on topic.
Many thanks to all for this excellent resource for Honda/Acura owners. I've learned a ton in the 6 months or so that I've been reading it. H-T is the BEST online forum I've found yet!

Well...because some peolple say that the earliest D-series, the 1g CRX Si/3g Civic Si D15A3, is different, and others say it'll work. Some d-series stuff won't swap with anything, like an 88 Civic clutch, and some stuff swaps with almost everything, like injectors (OK, there are exceptions). But before I buy an engine I really want to know if this will work first. Anyone out there got any PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with this?
no, the brown top ZC or 86-89 D16A1 Integra engine will not bolt to a 1st gen CRX transmission - for that swap you need 86-89 integra transmission, axles, knuckles/hubs, shift linkage and 86-87 integra distributor and ECU - the 87 Si wiring harness will plug into all of the connectors, no wiring changes required -for more information on the 1st gen CRX go to: http://www.redpepperracing.com...ddd40

well....wouldnt they bolt up like a 90 ls tranny would to a 93 ls motor? considering that you would have to do clutch mods???

The 84-7 civic trannys will not bolt to the 86-89 integra block or the brown cover ZC engines. I know this from personal experience. Having said that, the 85-7 Civic 4WD trans has the same bolt pattern as the 86-9 Integra motor and the 85-7 Civic 4WD motor will bolt to the 86-9 Integra trans. I have this set-up in my old SCCA GT-4 car (85-7 Civic 4WD block and 86-9 Integra trans).

So keithg, you are saying that the 85-87 Civic 4WD engine/tranny has the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 86-89 Integra engine/tranny? Interesting! I had always assumed that all 84-87 Civic/CRX engines/trannys shared the same bell housing bolt pattern. So the the 85-87 Civic 4WD engine has basically EW1/EW3/D15A3 internals with an Integra D16A1 bell housing bolt pattern. Could I then use an 85-87 Civic 4WD tranny in my CRX (with the rwd portion unused of course) so I could keep my stock axles, hubs, etc and bolt in a D16A1 Integra motor or brown top ZC? Because that is exactly what I want to do as I stated in my original post! Do you see any problem with doing this? And I'm just curious, but why would you use an 85-7 Civic 4WD block on an 86-9 Integra trans? And what model was your GT-4 car ? Thanks
p.s. projectTeG - I can't reach the article right now because rpr's site is down, but I don't think rpr ever says WHY you should use the 86-89 teg tranny. They just give the same generic advice that everyone else does of "use 86-89 (or 86-87 for vac advance) teg engine/tranny/ecu". My whole point in writing this post was to find out WHY it won't work. Do no bolts line up? Is one bolt slightly off? etc. But thanks for the info and link anyway. All advice and opinions are appreciated.

Okay, so I tried to bolt an 84-7 Civic/Crx trans to an 86-9 Integra block today and none of the bolt holes line up. The Integra block is a bigger bolt pattern than the Civic trans. I also checked to see if the 84-7 Civic/Crx axles fit the 85-7 Civic 4WD trans and they do not. The 85-7 Civic 4WD uses 86-9 Integra sized inner and outer CV joints. I have done several 86-7 Integra swaps into 86-7 Civic/Crx Si cars and could not find an axle combo that would allow you to use the Civic hubs with the Integra engine/trans. I suppose someone like driveshaftshop.com could build you some custom axles, but it would probably cost more than used Integra axles/knuckles/hubs. I used the Civic 4Wd block with the Integra trans in my 84-7 Crx GT-4 racecar because the Integra trans had more and better (mugen) gear ratios available. Good luck.
Hey Keithg, only way to use the EW motor and Teg tranny is with a adapter plate like Jamie uses.
But his clutch went kaboom right about here.....
Keith, I'm the one that hung out in the Honda tent most of Friday.
BTW tell Joe he sucks!!!!!
