Default poor mans performance exhaust... !!!

Ok i bought my car and it had a cracked exhaust manifold (95 civic d16z6) and a focuz axel back exhaust. (kinda ricey but doesnt sound bad at all)

First i bought a cheap *** header (remember this is the poor mans post) for like $100 ..works pretty good..

So now since i have a header, and axel back i think im going to buy this cheap test pipe for $30. (should i go 2" or 2 1/4"

Now.... next... i either sell my ricey axel back, and buy a cheap used muffler (like a ES Oval) and make my own axel back (all the $ i have)

or

i keep my axel back and get some bigger pipe bent back to the Resontator , and from the Resontator to the axel back (all the $ i have)

What do you all think?!?!? Thanks

So, so far your at 130 with out the muffler, if you buy a muffler your gonna be around 200. I would save up a little more and by a name brand catback, I have seen some go as low as 250 for a dc sports catback, and this way you will really never have to worry about the exhaust system again. With that cheap header and a cheap muffler, I would worry about replacing it in a year or two.

It sounds to me like you already know what you want, go with the 2.25 test pipe and buy a new muffler if you don't like your old one.

just search the classifieds and buy a catback used, i just sold my 5zigen for 200 bucks to a buddy, and i am selling a thermal 3" catback now with a 2 1/2-3" test pipe thermal was only on the car for a week so it is in MINT condition but that is quite a bit more than the 5 zigen.

My vote look on classifieds for cheap catback, or ebay muffler and custom piping.

How are the cops in your area? With no car and an es oval your car is gonna be pretty damn loud. Keep that into consideration.

Definitely do not get a 2.5" system. It is way too big for your setup and you will kill your low-end. Also, pounding out your cat will hurt your airflow compared to a test pipe or a hi-flow cat. Also, as I posted on your previous thread:

Pick up a car-sound hi-flow cat instead. $50 - $100
For N/A cars, hi-flows flow just as much as test pipes, do not smell, are much quieter, and are better for the environment (legal).

So will a H-F Cat flow well enough in a turbo application?...or should they just use a test pipe?

Since your in cali get a high flow cat carsound makes a 3 inch high flow cat they go for like 120 bucks worth it to be legal and really dosn't make all that much a differance with preformance either.

Turbo systems flow so much air that test pipes are beneficial compared to hi-flow cats. But as 99blackcivicSi said, you should stay legal, especially in California where emmisions laws are very strict.

Than you have me right now not looking or sounding legal open downpipe baby

i tried doing your poormans way when i first got my car. i got a paceshitter exhaust and the thing literally fell apart on me (have pics too), so i went to a muffler shop and got a new exhaust for my car outta stainless steel piping and a muffler. thing looks just like stock and flows 100 times better and only cost me 100 bucks, and its VERY quiet too. worth a try, theres gotta be a muffelr shop around you somewhere.

Like said before your car is gonna be loud as **** with the es oval and no cat setup. I have this same setup with a rs*r header and it is very loud. I like it though . Also don't just hollow out your cat. Either get a highflow cat or a test pipe. Hollowing out your cat won't give you much power.

Yup..hollowing out your cat creates turbulance, which slows down the air flow. This is why every car in my house has a test pipe and at least a filter if not an intake.
Civic...Test Pipe
Stealth...Test Pipe
Avolon...Test Pipe
Jeep...Test Pipe
soon Prelude...Test Pipe

If you know how to try and keep your quiet, or have a quiet exhaust...then you can use a test pipe. I've been pulled over so many times in my stealth running off the downpipe or with my test pipe and never recieved a ticket for it. They only say..."Son..Do you know what the word stealth means?...guess not." I'm not about to test them with my civic...thats why I have a quiet exhaust on it.
