Default sluggish?

Alright guys my friend needs your help,
Alright well my friend did a b16 swap in his 91 civic hatch. Everything went ok, but he got it running and he got it from the shop, they had to switch the knuckles. anyways he had put tranny fluid in the back of the car with the knuckels...so he got the car and we drive it from the shop and its really really sluggish, like its slower then my Std. and we go about mile and a half and the check engine light comes on and all of a sudden 3rd wont work, and its supper sluggish...like crawling....did the mecanics forget to put the tranny fluid in? cuz the bottles were full when he got the car back. but they might have used there own. What else could it be? In third its really bad like it makes a grinding/not catching kind on noise...oh he has a 8.8 flywheel and a action clutch...how would we go about checking the level of tranny fluid?
any help would greatly be appriceiated.

oh, we turned the car off and it throws a code 1 now...

by what you are saying it alsom make me believe that they didnt put fluid back into the trans. you shouldn't have a grinding problem like that. is that a new tranny that you got with youe swap or an old one that you had? i ask that becasue maybe it is a bad trans from the start

4th and 5th are usually the first to go on a worn tranny since they receive the most stress, but USUALLY 4 miles wont kill a tranny like that (least it didnt on mine on my first engine swap)

Does the car stay in gear in 4th and 5th?

what i would do is take another spare trans if you have one around and out it on and see how it acts with that. if it works fine then you know it was the trans that was bad. after the new one is on and the car still acts the same then you know its your motor ******* up

i'd drive it a little bit and see how the clutch settles in. sometimes it takes a few hundred miles for the clutch to work properly. depending on the clutch manufacturer and transmission, it might need break-in time. mine sucked at first in a few gears, but then it softened up. then i got a motor swap and now everything sucks but thats a different story. but before you check out the actual engine performance, rule out the possibility of a bad trans. maybe adjust the clutch a little?

so the trans is probally good right...it seems to shift fine...so i dont think the snycros are that bad...

OK, its probably not your transmission since it goes and stays into gear. How are the engine oil and coolant levels?? Have you performed a tune-up on the motor since you purchased it?? A code 1 is the oxygen sensor. My car ran like crap when my o2 sensor was bad. Does it pull hard when it is warming up??

he said since he put in tranny fluid in it. it hasnt thrown the code...so maybe it just got really hot?
