Default Engine Replacement on 98 Accord 4cyl...(what parts to keep from old engine?).

Long story short, there appears to be a crack in the block. A new engine is being installed next week. The mechanic is going to transfer the 2 week old water pump and timing belt from my existing engine to the new engine (which has less than 20K miles on it).

The head on the old engine was machined, and pressure tested twice. The mechanic and machine shop are certain that the head is good (70K miles on it). So, I'm going to keep the head and everything inside it (70K), the intake manifold (70K), and the water pump (off the new engine with 20K miles on it). If the new engine includes an alternator or starter, we'll use the parts on the new engine, and I'll ask them to strip those parts from the old engine as well.

My question is twofold. First, are there any other parts I should look into salvaging off the old engine? Second, since I don't intend to turn my house into a parts dept., what would the street price be for all the bits I mentioned...plus any addt'l parts I might salvage.

This engine replacement was an unexpected $2600 repair (including new clutch bits, and labor), so I'm just trying to determine how much of that expense I can offset, or whether I should just forfeit this whole idea, and get my $100 core charge back.

I posted some stuff in the other thread but heres some more.

the water pump is only $45 new, so a used one isn't worth too much in my mind.

the oil pan is worth keeping. a lot of people modify them for a turbo oil return line.

the crank is an expensive part, but you'll probably have a hard time finding a buyer.

any of the sensors that are in the block. I think thats only the knock sensor, the cyl position sensor, and the oil pressure sensor but there might be one or 2 more I can't think of

anything attached to the head and intake manifold, like injectors and sensors etc.

A lot of the stuff you mention looks like it will be buried in the block. Not sure I'll have the luxury of time to tear into it when I drove down to pick up the car (200 miles away). Thanks for the ideas...I'll study helms to see where all these bits are, and make notes on where things are and which parts seem easy to access. I'll have a small tool bag with me, so if it's a bolt on part, I'll ****** it.

I saw the other post as well...thanks!

forgot to mention the distributor

everything but the crank should be really easy to get to if the engine is just sitting there on the shop floor, and can be removed with simple hand tools. some of the sensors are pretty large though, like 19, 21, 23, 24 mm.

That's a grip. I just dumped in a new stock engine into my car and it ended up costing me $1K total. Our motors are cheap, no one wants them. You shouldn't have any problems finding a complete motor with transfering that much stuff from your old motor for a cheap price. It should only cost $450-$750 for the engine and about $400 for labor.

I wish that were the case. I checked with a trusted local mechanic, and he estimated about the same price for the work. It could take me the rest of the month to find someone local to do the work for $40/hr and charge ACTUAL time, rather than book time. The shops that I know and trust charge $70/hr, book time.

Thanks for the info...but at this point, I've authorized the work. I'm frustrated enough with this situation. I really don't feel like reading any more posts about the $2 mechanic down the street that can get a new Honda engine for $50. Not taking this out on you aznxphreak...I know you're trying to help.

It's k0o, and I understand because I've been through that road. I just don't like other people getting ripped off. The prices I listed are actually the prices for most places in my area (Los Angeles). Motorsport places or just regular mechanic shops. There are only a few places that might charge more and one of them would be a dealership.
