Something odd when I bolted new wheels on today....I need your opinion

Well the two rims that weren't damaged I put on my car today because two of the tires I was running were bald.
The lugnuts from Tirerack are tapered to fit the Kosei K1's. I jacked the car up, took off the old wheels. Then I put the new wheels on and put the new lug nuts on. I noticed that they were 17mm instead of 19mm like stock. No worries, they threaded on fine.
So I pushed along the edge of the wheel to make sure the wheel was flush with the hub. Tightened it by hand on both sides.
Then I lowered the car back down and heard the sound of the lug nuts skipping threads. That was pretty odd. All (five per wheel) of the lugs had jumped about five threads and needed to be retightened. So I jacked it up and did it again. Lowered it again and this time there was no sound. Then I continued to torque to spec.
I was under the impression that all lug nuts had the same thread pattern, so are there different thread patterns??? The wheels and lugs were sold by tirerack to an MR2 owner, who then sold them to me.
If they thread on it should be safe right?

Are you sure you did not hear the wheel skipping the threads??
If the lug nuts skipped they would need to be very stripped and wouldnt have tightned at all.

I understand what you're saying. But the thing is I made sure the wheels were flush with the hub and hand tightened the lugs never tightening two lugs next to each other in succession. I can swear that the hub was flush with the wheel. Then when I lowered it back down I hear a grrrrrt
well i mean you torqued the lugs down and nothing seemed to come loose or strip off right?
If the Lugs are tight I wouldnt worry about it. Check the lugs after you drive each time over the next couple days and call it good

are you positive your weren't hearing other sounds...ie springs compressing, your jack lowering etc?
If the lugs skipped threads, (unless they are much larger than the studs in which case they wouldn't tighten properly) you would have stripped either the lug or the stud if not both....and most likely you would notice this?
Also, are you using hubcentric rings?

yes there are many different threads.
NO, if they thread on does not mean they are safe- Make sure you have the correct setup.
12x1.5 I think.
