My Swap Situation! Look inside and help!
Ok so right now i have a D16Y8 in my CRX and am loving it so far...I want to go all motor whatever i do but have never done any internal work on an engine and dont want to have my car left in pieces for too long. Now...a friend and i came across a Z6 engine for dirt cheap but it has 220k miles on it. My decision is what to do...
1. Should i buy the motor and rebuild the bottom end for high compression/bore out/bearings and slap on my Y8 head with a cam and valve job.
2. Build the Z6 and just slap that in.
3. Just build up my Y8.
Like i said i'm not familiar with rebuildig engines but i am willing to learn. I want a reliable daily driven engine that will give me considerable horsepower. Any other suggestions are welcome!
Thanks!

What type of parts should i use on the bottom end? Like i said i'm new to this...i'm just going to grab a helms/haynes and go from there. Are the Z6 and Y8 blocks the same? can i interchange cranks? what should i do?
If you wanna stay d-series, buy that z6 and rebuild the bottom end. Go as high of compression as you can on pump gas and bore as big as possible, sleeve it if you must. Now, go and get that y8 head ported, this is going to make a huge difference. Get as big of a cam as you feel you can run on the street and make sure not to skimp on a header, don't get a something made by Darrell and Darrick Contreras
Good luck!

Good luck!
I say build the Z6. But before you do anything, I'd suggest that you do your research and learn about rebuilding the motor, not only from a factory manual, but if you can, ask others who have experience in this area. They can help you get the most performance out of your motor, and they have the first hand experience. Most likely, they can also make you aware of any problems you may stumble upon or get stuck on.
The Z6 motor i am getting has 220k miles on it so should i definitely bore it out? if so how much? i want to run high compression (low to mid 12's:1 at most) would i need a resleave the block? (hope not).

You'll have to inspect the cylinder walls to know if you need to bore, most likely a good hone job will do. Also, I wouldn't think you would wanna go much higher than 11.5:1 on pump gas.
Is it practical to go 12:1 compression or should i try to stick around 11:1 since it's a daily driver. I have no idea how compression affects drivability but i know more compression means more power.
As for bore/hone...how much would a bore or hone job cost each? When i go to get pistons such as PM3 (what i'm looking at now for this setup) where should i look to get ones for my more diameter?
Thanks again,

You can run 12.0:1 on pump gas, but you have to be careful with tuning and better hope you don't get a bad tank of gas. I've setup street cars to run 12.4:1 on pump gas, but thats REALLY pushing it.
Boring the block is going to cost a good deal more than just honing it. You should be able to get it honed professionally for under $100. You can order larger pistons from honda, but only .25 mm over.

The engine has 220,000 miles on it so i'm worried i may have to bore it but i guess i wont be able to tell untill i take off the head. Is there any way to tell though, like if the engine isn't burning oil i should be alright? Will a hone job take away some imperfections or am i risking it with an engine with 220k miles on it? If i use a Z6 gasket with those pistons i can bring it down to 11.7:1 comp which should be a lot better. Back to my question should a hone take car of the cylinders?
