daytona's autocross at the speedway!

Well sad to say that this weekend I went to the autocross for the first time at the daytona international speed way and the scca like always held it... well for my first time autocrossing it was fun the very discouraging because of the lack of organizational skills the central florida scca sanction has... tech inspection ended and we waited an hour for the drivers meeting to start at 10
then after the drivers meeting we waiting about a hour and a half just for them to get the people to stand in there stations on the track and to get the first set of runs underway"11:30"... well the first group went and it was fun .. in between the group changing we waiting another 90 to 120 min... which i think is sorry because they only needed 6 people to work the course also becuase of some delays and they having to explain everything to everyone ten times because they dont know how to explain anything ... by this time it was "1:25"and the second group went after we got our runs in " i was in the second group " again we waited another hour for the third group to go now IT was "2:30" and we still havent even finished a full rotation... at the rate we were going there was only enough time for two groups to go agian .. so were talking 4 runs for the whole day .. now the actuall autocrossing it self was awsome i am definatly hooked but i am extremly discouraged to go again because of the wait times produced by the central florida scca auto cross division ... so a big
to them .. because it definatly turns me off to all of this ... so guys are the rest of you guys having similar wait times like this cause if so i dont think this might be for me if not then i will autocross else were... p.s. on top of all of it the track was only a 17 to 18 SECOND track and we were still only turning about 4 turns for the whole day.... there is something definatly wrong here i think

ouch! Doesn't sounds like much of a day, imo. I've run into the same delay issues with CFR SCCA and Buccaneer Region (N. FL)... it seems to be quite common to have delays between runs from what I've seen.
On the other hand, holding an event at Daytona was probably not nearly as easy from a logistics point of view as most of the events run by CFR. The CFR guys are all really nice and it seems to me that they always try to put on a good event even if they're not able to get in as many runs as they'd like. Was the course really less than 20 seconds? Damn that's short!
The problems/issues you had with the Daytona event are the same ones that have pushed me more towards HPDE events. Granted HPDE's have more risk, more cost, and more wear on vehicle components but they have ton's more seat time
Oh, one last thing, CFR almost always has only 4 runs but Buccaneer usually gets in 5 or 6 ad sometimes fun runs afterwards...

Wow, that sucks to hear. That was going to be my first auto-x and I decided to skip it for a few reasons. I guess now I'm glad I did. But you're right, that definatly can't be normal.
All the Fla. events i've been to so far have been fine, sometimes there are delays but it sounds like you hit on a very bad day. Here I was, bitter that the only AutoX that was right down the street was going on and I was down at Moroso (well, bitter isn't the word, the Moroso event was pretty cool). Don't quit based on one bad experience, there's plenty of clubs to run with. We GRMers AutoX whenever we can, look for my black Type R with some other GRM cars, I'm sure we'll meet eventually..
That sounds like the worst run autocross I have ever heard of.
Are you sure about a 17 second course? That's smaller then the interval between cars at our events! Around here heads start to roll if someone makes a 30 second course.
My suggestion, attend the club meeting and see if you can help streamline their autocross procedure. Wasted time = less autocrossing.

sorry to hear about that Mike. I would start looking into Chin Motorsports in our area and get some real seat time and experience (nothing against Auto-X'ers).
Unfortunately, you went to the worst CFR event this year. This was NOT a typical autocross.
a) Daytona is a TINY lot. Even our other "small" lots are larger.
b) FTD for the day was like 14.9.....terrible terrible. Come to one of the other events if you want to see how it's really supposed to be
Honestly, we (CFR) knew that the Daytona event would be tiny. We also knew that a lot of people who'd never seen an autocross would see it for the first time, and hopefully it'd get us some publicity. Unfortunately, the small lot and high price kept a lot of regulars from the event. For instance, I stayed back in Gainesville and ran with Martin Sports Car Club. I personally hate their system, but the thought of ~70 second course, with 3rd gear areas, and only 10 mins from my door was too enticing.
Really, come on out to one of the CFR west events and see what it's SUPPOSED to be like.
Xian, our events lately have been 5 min, and 10 max. FWIW, last Bucc event I went to only got 5. I was almost disappointed
The CFR West events have become a lot better since you've run with us though. We are now back upto a pretty full staff of people helping out. When you were running with us, that was really the lowest of times. We've really tried to step it up a notch.

Our next smallest courses on the west coast are mid 40 seconds, and go up from there to the mid 70s. Usually a lot of time spent at the top of 2nd too, or 3rd for shorter geared cars like my own.
For anyone reading this...it wasn't a typical autocross. This was a publicity event put on to try and show the "show" types what autocross was and what it's about. FWIW, it did have close to 100 competitors, a few more than our usual turnout, and as stated, quite a few of the regulars didn't show up for the reasons stated in the previous post.
Our REGULAR events at FSF, and GIR are much much better organized, have better courses, and will hopefully bring more people in.

yeah man i am sure it was 17 second course 90 percent of the cars were turning 17's i think two turned like a 16.1 .. this is what the course was consisted of .... after the start you vere to the left then back to the right directly ahead is a shicane then a u-turn then another shicane then the finish line it was rediculaus lol.... every one there was complaining .... I heard they just slaped it together to lure us to the race weekend ... the only highlight of the day was we got to take a parade lap around the track ...
while we were in the infield me and an s2000 stoped for two minutes let everyone gap us then we hit it and were racing through the entire infield of daytona that was cool
... but other than that yes i am sure the course was 17 seconds ... hey you west coast guys got it good ... ill try a few more outside the cf region and see what happens ... but who know ...

OK, Cool! I'll make a point of catching one of the events at Gville Raceway next season
BTW, how are you enjoying the MR2 vs. your old Protege? I'm kinda scared to see what you can do with a sweet chassis like the MR2 considering what you were capable of in a lightly modded Protege!

Ahhhh, that makes more sense.

Thanks!

I was attending the Gran-Am race, and stumbled upon this tiny auto-x. My brother and I were wishing we had known about it. It had to have been the smallest track I have EVER seen. I still think it was an awesome publicity act, and I hope it attracted a couple of new people.

I'm worried that people get a sour impression, much like the original poster of this thread did. Hopefully we'll get some of those guys to head over to the GIR event in January, or the Bucc. SCCA event on the 23rd at Whitehouse Airfield.

I would love to come up your way, but unfortunately Miami is closer so Im stuck with SF region/Equip Rapid. I did attend one even about half a year ago up in Sebring, and I have to say, you guys are MUCH more organized, but Im sure we'll get back on our feet.

Actually, Sebring was put on by CFR East, the same guys who put on Daytona...usually, unless we don't have enough workers....ie, this year I had to be Worker Chief both days. Also took PAX FTD on Saturday
CFR West does Tampa an Gainesville currently, and we're actively looking for new sites.
Since you're near Miami, Palm Bay is closest. I'll be there next weekend as there's a MR2 meet going on in Orlando on Saturday, and then a bunch (supposedly) of us going to Palm Bay for the autocross on Sunday. That should be pretty close for ya. Still a small lot, but not as small as Daytona by far.

Live in West Palm actually, but my brother(he drives a miata) and I were thinking of running in Palm Bay, and we still might do so. It all depends on how the SF club turns out next year.
I would attend this weekend, but my car need attention, and I have to give her the entire weekend.

WTF 17 sec. course? Over an hour delay? Yeah if I was you and wanted to autox in that area jump in and help those guys out...if they'll let you.
Most of the larger autx's Ive been to are generally disorganized. I always thought it was from the larger groups of drivers, but you guys had only a hundred drivers...not to large really.
I love our smaller events 30 plus folks 6 or 7 runs plus fun runs.
Really glad you had a blast though...damn I wish our season wasn't over with
