B16/GSR Build Up Vs. ITR Motor
I was wondering what you guys would prefer to drop in a 96 DX Coupe, not including basic intake/exhaust combo because I'll do that regardless which motor I get.
I want to hit 13.5 on street tires so that sounds like a pretty realistic goal without making a buttload of power.
ITR swap- about $5000 with shipping
B16A swap- $2000 plus I can sell the block
GSR block- $500??
CTR pistons with rings- $400
Skunk2 manifold- $300?
Skunk2 stage II cams, valvetrain, gears, tuning- $1200 more or less
They both come out close to about $5000, and the GSR buildup will probably make a tad bit more power than the ITR motor.
Any thoughts?
Yes I searched, thanks.

LSD isn't that big of an issue for me so that's why I chose getting the B16 swap because the gearing is equivilant to ITR(USDM) gearing.

i think building up the poor mans type r will cost you more than 5k said done deal. youll end up replacing a lot of things and it all adds up. but personally id say just piece together a motor. b18c1 block with b16 or type r head. CTR pistons. type r tranny, good clutch and fly, all the basic bolt-ons.
thats what id do with 5k.

Thanks. I've been thinking about just investing in a Type R swap. Much easier and probably more reliable(since I'll be working on teh car haha).

Ok, heres my opinion on this...
Now, since you are willing to spend $5k on a STOCK USED motor Ill use that as the budget...
B16 head $350
GSR Shortblock $800
CTR Pistons $300
ARP rod bolts $50
Bearings $150
Oil/Water pump $250
Timing belt $60
Skunk2 IM $250
Billet TB $300
CTR Cams $550
B16 Hydro trans $700
P28 ECU Chipped $250
New Clutch $300
New Flywheel $300
stock B series mounts $120
Al gaskets and seals $100
DC JDM 4-1 $260
AEM CIA $190
So far youve spent $4680 on parts... time for labor...
Valve Job/resurface head $200
Complete longblock assembly $600
total $5480...
This will be a brand new motor, all new parts... This will definitely outperform a stock C5 and there will be no wories of not knowing what the guy in japan did to the motor before you got it...
I try to avoid running used motors... Its a risk, theres no telling where the motor was before or what it has been through... I mean, the are compression and leak down tested but still, that doesnt insure that 5,000 miles down the road that motor isnt going to die on you... Its just better to do it the right way, even if you have to spend a little extra $$$... $5K is a big investment, just make sure you invest it wisely

You are forgetting about the cost of alot of other stuff. Any time you tear down an engine, there are gaskets to be replaced. Figure on AT LEAST $200 for a complete gasket set. And although you CAN reuse bearings, it is better to replace them. Another $200 (or so). Then there are those pistons you mention. Replacing pistons without reboring the cylinders is halfassing of the worst kind. Boring will probably set you back another $100-$200. And as usual, you should always budget some extra mone (a few hundred) when tearing down an engine. Because you never know what else you have to replace.

Well if you've been reading the whole post than you'll know that I want a 1.8 block.
I think I'll just go with the Type R swap with Skunk2 cams.
