shifting questions
if goin to a stop and im in 4th gear or sumtin, is it ok to go from 4th to neutral, then when its time to go start in 1st gear with going through 3rd n 2nd?

normally you push the clutch in, shift to next gear, let the clutch out.
double clutching involves this:
push the clutch in, shift to neutral, let the clutch out, let the clutch back in, shift to next gear, let the clutch out
letting the clutch out in neutral stops the input shaft from spinning, this makes it much easier on your synchros. I also double clutch when I'm coming to a stop, before putting it in first gear. You'll physically feel it going into gear with less resistance.
Rev matching is done everytime you shift, when you give it gas by matching the revs. If you didn't rev match, each gear shift would be jerky. Rev matching becomes much more important when downshifting or upshifting while skipping gears.

Have I been doing this wrong? The way I rev match, for example downshifting to first at 20mph, I press the clutch. Move shifter to neutral, release clutch. Blip throttle for rev match. Press clutch and downshift. It drops into first like butter. Most of the time anyway

Jesse H: Letting the clutch out in neutral just makes the layshaft RPM match the engine RPM. It does not stop it or anything.
How I double clutch....
1) shift to neutral
2) clutch out
3) rev to the destination RPM for the destination gear (brings layshaft up to speed)
then very quickly:
4) clutch in
5) shift to destination gear
6) clutch out

Doh...I always get that confused.
You think after looking at the stupid flywheel on various cars for ever I'd have it down pat by now.
Know what's cool about a 300ZXTT? It's rwd. That means you can drop the tranny in less than an hour. Lucky basturds.

Please correct me if im wrong but isnt the whole point of double clutching to rev match. If you dont rev match then double clutching is absolutly useless, thats the whole point of doing it. It saves your synchros and is used in racing when downshifting into corners as to not upset the balance of your car. Seriously if im wrong then tell me but this is what ive always understood. Oh and skipping gears when downshifting isnt very harmful to your synchros even if you dont double clutch and rev match, just make sure your going slow enough for the gear so that you dont run those rpms too high.
