Default D15A2 (Carbed) questions; small crack in head from overheating..

D15A2 Honda CRX HF (Carbed) 1984-1987

Ok, here is the story: Friend's little brother was driving, car overheated shut off (happened ~5 times). After that, the car would not start. It would turn over but not start. Anyways, got it towed to my house and pulled the plugs. Cylinders #3 and #4 had detonated so bad, that parts/sections of the electrodes had been detonated away. I did a compression check 80-40-95-95. Pulled the head and luckly no piston damage or cylinder wall damage. Can see where the headgasket blew from a water jacket and cylinder #3.

Anyways... here is my question: The head has a crack, from the spark plug hole?? The hole that is visable from the bottom of the head in between the 3 valves on each cylinder. I am not sure how deep it is or how bad. But what should I do about this? Does the head need to be replaced? Can I get a pressure test done to it and see if it is still good? The car is worth junk and basically not worth putting much money into.

Here are pics:

Sorry for the poor quality, but it might help out a little.

Thanks for the space.

Oh and just for a laugh about how dumb this guy is: his first car, a blazer.. he burnt the clutch up, and rolled it in a ditch within a couple months of getting it. He then got a grand am, ran off in a ditch and messed the front up and the axles/suspension the second day after he got it, then a month or two later the motor siezed in cause he did the same thing; his grand am kept cutting off (about 6 or 7 times because of overheating) and finally it will not turn over anymore. Now after a couple months of this car, he does the above.

Anybody else? Are there any other heads interchangable? Or just the A2?

That looks like a 12v motor, so any carbed head should be interchangeable. The FI head does not have CVCC equipment. I believe the Hf originally came with an 8v though, so that may be a FI motor, in which case you should look for any Si head. I can not remember the engine codes right now.

Oh, and remove your "friend's" driving priviliges (sp?).

First, not my friend.. My friend's brother.. I would never have a friend like this.. lol

It is a 12valve carbed motor. I just would like to know which heads I could use, if any others besides this one that came off of it, so when I go to a junkyard I will have a few more options.

After some research you have a DX engine there, so look for an 83-87 CRX Dx or the civic equivilent. An Si head does not have CVCC and so will not work.
