its been covered like 100x but I few a few Q's painting wheels.
ok guys I have decided to throw on the blackies for a few days and paint my rims. I am painting them bronze, The name of the paint is Premum Rust-oleum metallic. The number is 7274. Antique Brass metallic... I got the paint tp from DIY racing. Ok the Q's I have are the follwing...
I am gonna use the index card method to wedge in between the tire and rim and then tape plastic around the rest. Did you guys recomend painting the inside of the rim as well??
- once the rims are off and cleaned, what grit sand paper do I use to start sanding? My wheels all ready have a painted aluminum finish.
- do I want to prime the wheel first? and if so how many coats and what color primer?
- Once I start using the paint how many coats is needed?
- Do I need to clear coat the Rims after im done painting??
Please give me your insight...

Get an adhesive promotor also - im doing mine saturday. - this will make the paint really stick.
Degunk the wheel - aircraft remover works best.
I was told 120 then like 400 grit.
As for coats ya gotta see when each coat dries.

120 then 400, I was thinign something like 700 all the way, you just wanna scuff it up to let the paint stick, dont wanna take the wheel apart. Prolly be best to paint sand it... Any ideas?
I think I used regular Spray Primer, 2 coats. Then 4 coats of Color and then 2 more of regular gloss clearcoat. I don't really remember... the paint job lasted all of about 12 hours. It started chipping before I ever got them back on the car, so I had them powdercoated the next day. But I'm pretty sure thats how I did the coats.
I used 150 Grit, then 400, then 600 grit paper. If you strip the inside of the wheel, then paint it, but if you can mask it off well enough that you don't get any of the stripper back there, then you shouldn't have to paint it.

Ive done my wheels on my old civic twice, and they never chipped or anything.
Get some sandpaper and scuff up the clearcoat. Im not sure what grit, but not too rough. Then i get 2 cans of the color I want and go to town. It is best to paint when its around 70 degrees or above. If not the paint will splatter easy.
I spray about 5 lightish coats, untill the color is even. Then use 1 can of clearcoat on all 4 wheels. Make sure to keep the can moving when you paint, not too fast, not too slow, just enough so they look wet and dont drip.
Clean the wheels with soap and water. YES paint the insides too. I used wide masking tape for the outside of the tires. It dosent stick well, the card method might be better. I wouldnt use primer, but thats just me.
Then when the clear is dried it will look almost like powdercoating. Sort of. When I did mine people didnt believe i just sprayed them with a can.
Im about to paint my VW wheels black.
