Just did a rear break change on my friend's GSR.. The spatula trick didn't work because the piston was hard to twist. After getting it twisted in a little more, it was easier to turn. We had to buy the tool to turn the piston.
The other side was so damn easy to turn. The spatula would have worked on that one.

i understand the tool is cheap... but if i already have a tool or item that will work, why would i go out and buy the tool. youre a tool.

I used a putty knife (a bit thicker and stiffer than a spatula) and it worked fine. As stated, watch to make sure the seals aren't ripping or being punctured by the pointy ends of the whatever-tool-you-decide.
